The new total puts the film at #20 in the highest grossing anime films in the U.S
Would have more if they would've put it in more theaters. My dad was interesting in it because of user reviews

I know. I would have gladly paid to see it if it had been shown in a theater that wasn't 4 hours away from where I live. The one theater even said that they wanted to show it, but the distributors wouldn't work with them for some reason. It doesn't makes any sense, I was able to see Poppy Hill and The Wind Rises at the same theater just fine.

I saw it around when it first came out over here. There were probably about 3 other people in the theater, which is about what I expected for something like this.

I think the movie is very beautiful, so I'm glad to see that it did reasonably well. Hopefully people will learn the right lessons from this and theatrically release more anime films. I'll certainly be willing to see them.

That's not a good argument for asking for more theaters.

It's the worst grossing Studio Ghibli film ever in North America. It really didn't do well. Poppy Hill opened in less theatres than Kaguya and still hit 1 million when all was said and done.

Which is a shame, because quality wise it's one of the best Ghibli films since North America started screening new Ghibli films in theatres.

But it's really not surprising it tanked. It's slow paced and the animation and visual design is far different than most people are used to from Ghibli.

This film could really use an Oscar win to bump up the attention.

(Edit: I forgot about Tales of Earthsea--that one was actually the worst grossing Ghibli film ever in North America. This is second worst)
