The second season, episodes 1-8: the project is, as always, as poorly researched and lazily written as ever: (26 points follow episodes consequently):

1) Kings have never come out to a fortress' walls to scream out their ultimatums; messengers were always used for such causes.

2) The idea that a young prince from the times of medieval cruelty would be shocked and hysterical about commoner civilians being executed by his enemy is ridiculous; there was not a lot more mundane and conventional than heads being chopped; the life of commoners was not of significant value as they were not meant to be as fully human as the nobles. Even genuinely good nobles believed that commoners are not in effect different from, say, cows, or even below them, so it is only natural for them to be killed, though it may be a bit regretful purely from the economic perspective.

3) The episode when the main crown price lad ran out of the fortress to personally fight an enemy is absurd on many levels, including his fight with the twice-to-thrice heavier opponent. The laws of physics do not exist in this project to a degree that it is impossible to be submerged into the story in such too in-your-face blunder. A horse jumping from a cliff edge down is absurd as due to horse's significant weight it would be suicidal (much more than even for a human).

4) The king of "barbarian" neighbor state who was unsuccessfully attacking the fortress has asked "why?" before being killed, even though it was absurd as the rough customs of his kingdom dictated that it would be a possible outcome in this situation, and it should be expected. Author has made the king to be an imbecile. The way the king was killed is also absurd as kings have personal guards that protect them. The killer general would be killed himself right on the spot.

5) The idea that the evil prince would "set free" a blind princess makes no sense as blind people unless they are literally bound, which is not the case here, feel equally free or not free wherever they are. The reason is that no matter how much they are used to move around with a white cane and touching things by hands, they can not really feel new places as "free" as those of us who can see.

6) the king of the main kingdom is shown to free himself from chains because his sweat has dissolved them after a half year of his imprisonment. This is, of course, an obvious nonsense. Also, dungeons are not famous for being warm places. Even during hot summers temperature there is pretty low, so the king would not be able to produce much sweat anyway.

7) The king releasing his high profile hostage from occupant forces alive or with no condition does not make much sense since as a measure to delay the chase that is after him it would not work. A couple of pursuers would take care of the former hostage while the rest of the platoon would capture the fugitive king.

8) When the king orders his crowned prince to gather another fifty thousand men to recapture the country, the lad is shown with a theatrically sad/shocked facial expression. This is ridiculous since royal children are raised to not show their emotions since much earlier age than this lad.

9) Some monologues are stupid. For example, the crown prince's servant lad wonders out loud if he should buy fish in a coastal city as it is so much fresher than fish that can be purchased in the capital. And yet he did not buy it because it would add to the luggage for their journey. But fresh fish is purchased to be cooked, not put to a luggage, otherwise it makes no sense to buy fresh fish; so the whole monologue is absurd.

10) In one of the scenes, a female archer is shown jumping on the deck of a ship to protect it from pirates. She has continued to use her bow, which is absurd for a close distance combat. It is impossible to imagine that it would make sense ever (unless the bow is magical and somehow can be used for defense).

11) The idea that a king would appoint to be a crown prince someone unrelated is not realistic. Kings of the past wanted to have their own descendants to rule and they conceive a lot of children for that purpose, not just one. And if the queen was not giving births, then kings got rid of them one way or another ever at the times when divorces were formally banned by the church (they were buying exceptions for themselves by making donations).

12) The viceroy of the coastal city was simply relieved of his duties and banished for his theft of taxes, which is absurd as it is a capital crime; normally he would be executed. Also, this whole part of this story is absurd since it was shown that the crown prince decided to give back supposedly excessively collected taxes to the people after uncovering the secret fraud scheme by the former viceroy. If people were excessively taxed, then it would be a huge scandal in the city and the crown prince lad would have learned about as soon as he entered it. However, nothing like that is shown in the anime, so there is nothing to return to the citizens in terms of taxes. The fraud was, apparently, with just pocketing the taxes that were collected in proper amounts. The project is just destroying its own logic every few minutes.

13) Authors apparently have no idea how maritime battles go. A number of tiny vessels could not have possibly capture pirates as the only circumstance it would be possible would be if the pirate ships would have been surrounded by ships that have more than enough cannons to sink them. It was not the depicted situation at all, meaning that the pirates, if they were losing, would just sail away to their base. Also, major coastal cities always had their own fleet for protection, the city would not need those tiny vessels and a sea merchant to protect it. And yet the city is depicted to have no real fleet, which is nonsense.

14) A bad merchant is shown just freely entering a dungeon where captive pirates are held, which is absurd as the prisoners are well guarded by the city's authorities. The author does not care even about the most basic sanity of the story.

15) The king of the occupying nation is shown communicating with a female knight right from the tower where he is imprisoned. It is absurd since important prisoners would be either put too high above or below the ground, making such communications impossible.

16) This king is depicted saying that he does not believe that his brother is behind his imprisonment, that the brother is not aware, even though there is literally no way he would not be complicit, let alone not know about. This is absurd since if the king would believe that it would mean that he is mentally deficient. Such people did not get crowned; his brother would have received the crown. Or the king would have been nominal and the whole court would only listen to his sane brother, but this situation would not require the imprisonment of the king.

17) The crown prince lad has told the female knight that she can remove an axle from the ox cart to find money there. However, it is physically impossible to do it the way it was depicted, let alone to hide money there. Besides, the removal of an axle is not a two second feat as shown in the anime.

18) Authors, apparently, do not know much about blind people as they show a blind princess missing her target over and over when she was trying to kill the ruling brothers of an enemy state. In reality, blind people orient very well by sound as they gauge quite accurately both distance and direction where their interlocutors stand and easily adjust to their movements. The way the princess was depicted shows that she is not only blind, but also deaf, but the narrative does not point that out at all.

19) The plot turn about a huge treasure from eighty years ago no one cared about being a ruse that evil merchant believed was good enough to lure his enemies out is ridiculous. The evil merchant is written as an imbecile, even though he is supposed to be a rich and successful businessman.

20) The whole part with this ruse was bad as it would make much more sense to arrest evil merchant to investigate his connections and expose his crimes. Many lives would have been saved versus having a mini-war because of him.

21) Characters are shown screaming to each other while some of them are in the middle of a battlefield and others are on the walls of a fortress, which is blatantly absurd as there is no way they could possibly hear each other.

22) During the fight between strategist and his evil merchant friend at the sea, a lot of ships with help catch up. However, it would have been impossible as preparing this many ships to sail takes a long time.

23) The evil merchant was shown cut by a strategist's sword in his stomach to a degree that blood has started to come out from his mouth. It is actually lethal wound if not treated with a complicated surgery immediately that would stop the bleeding and get the cut innards sown back together, what was practically impossible in the medieval/ancient setting. And yet the evil merchant is shown to be pretty healthy and lively right after getting this deadly wound.

24) The scene where the evil mask-man invades a cathedral to retrieve a famous sword is absurd. He and his team manage to climb atop the cathedral to break-in through its windows, let alone via regular entrance. It is impossible to carry out as they would not be able to approach the cathedral unnoticed. Also, the multi-piece windows of cathedrals can not be broken through by the bodies, unlike huge pieces of glass (though even the latter is possible only if the glass is not laminated/multi-layered).

25) The idea to allow occupying enemies leave alive, among some others, is so idealistic that it is highly improbable that people would follow the crown prince lad. The invaders have killed countless comrades and civilians, and people always want revenge in such circumstances.

26) The last scene is showing the crown prince's troops marching towards the capital in a battle formation, which is absurd as it is impossible to maintain. Travel formation of the troops looks nothing like that. Also, weirdly the troops do not have any luggage carts with them, even though they are huge part of the caravan.

Just for comparison, I finished watching the original 1991-1993 OVAs for this project.

Amazingly enough, the fewer details of the plot that it offers comparing to the new series makes the old series look more convincing as a lot of stupidity of the new series is those details. And the main lad character is way less annoying and pathetic there.

Of course, technical merits of animation of that time are much weaker than that of newer projects. Outdated character designs (though I am not a fan of the new series' designs either), typical for old anime weird palette, low details on every level, outdated sound design. However, the old series feature some of the best Japanese voice actors, including famous ones.

It also has to be noted that the old series offer some events in significantly different order versus the new one, and it covers material up to the middle of the second season of the newer series. The newer series show the coastal arc.

Since it is twenty five years from the older series it is weird that the newer series could only present few more episodes of material comparing to the older series. Did the original novels progress this little? Or the new manga artist is just did not draw the bulk of the material?
