(& others to the same effect) OK, sounds like it's worth sampling. Thanks for the input! Although the comparisons to Berserk are keeping me on the wary side... |

I really hope that they release all the volumes as they become available.
The new arc is getting good too. |

@lebrel Well the art style, scope and target audience are very similar to Berserk. There is also a high degree of violence, rape, a lot of suffering and many many deaths. The manga isn´t nihilistic though and calmed down after the exploration section started. VN ins´t a perfect score in the darkness department but let´s say a 8/10 and the manga is a 16+ / shrink wrapped publication in Germany. Wolfsmund/Azumi from my picks are WAY more messed up as they have hardcore child rape and 11/10 gore. VN also features similar content with the early rape of a farm girl clearly standing out. Torfin meets her just before she is raped but can´t be bothered to interfere and calls her "weak" during their next encounter. That is still my favorite moment in the manga as it´s pretty daring to turn your protagonist into such a bastard before you start to redeem him.
VN´s darkest moments are all very justified by the narratives and not only due to the scenario on it´s own as in lesser series. Cough Übel Blatt cough. VN never throws the female characters under the tracks either in the way a certain Bastard would. That hot mess started in the same year as Berserk and was even a Shounen way back when but official porn still exists... Urgh. VN or the rest of my recommendations are an easy fit for today´s HBO/Showtime audience and the way more extreme The Walking Dead i selling like crazy too while still featuring grizzly gore, rape and nihilism that can keep up with Miura. It´s a 10/10 too and the best US comic on the market on top. The AMC show though is the definition of a B-. Happy reading and we are currently on the second longest hiatus for Berserk. September!!!! Eeeeee!! I feel I should remain a little cautious until Kodansha posts something to confirm (though I've trusted them all along when they said the halt was only temporary) but that seems like excellent news!
Personal history with Vinland Saga: I mainly read cute and happy shoujo manga. I subscribe to many such titles at my local comic shop. I also subscribe to Vinland Saga. Last time I checked out out with my stack of books and the cashier saw a bunch of lovey-dovey sparkly covers atop a volume of grisly vikings, her response was... well, it was something like, "Oh, Vinland Saga! This is great!!" (and no comment on the shoujo. Ahahah... but I love it all :) ) Anyway, count me as another who is certainly no fan of intense bloody violence, but who finds the characterization and representation of the historical setting and the story itself entirely fascinating. It's very worth reading, even if the genre isn't typically your favourite. It's just SO WELL DONE, and I want to know more!! |
