As someone who isn't really interested in the Higurashi series, what makes it appealing to the fans?

If I say "the story and characters" it will be too vague, right? Then my answer would be "the mood".
I really love the atmosphere of Higurashi. The quiet and cheerful village with something dark lurking underneath. Maybe it is because I never was much a fan of the horror genre, but back when I first read, I haven't felt as spooked by a story before, which was quite a great experience. But the most interesting part is the contrast. Unlike other stories, Higurashi is not all darkness oppressing you every turn. It is also bright and vivid, which really highlights the unsettling and chilling. Higurashi excel in mood whiplash, and it is really great. |

Honestly?? I thought the series was going to be another typical harem set back in the 80's in a rural part of Japan. spoiler[Hell I honestly thought Keiichi was the main character until the 2nd season.] I will admit looking back the first season had a lot of flaws, however if you re-watch it it makes you think why is this happening?? Then season two or Kai comes around and answers all the lingering questions in four arcs and wraps up nicely. I praise higurashi so much because it's the first series I've ever seen that made question who can I trust, is what going on real or inside the persons head? Why is there a reset but with different outcomes? That's what hooked in me As far as the other arcs go I only know about Rei and that just ties up loose ends for a certain main character. I will not spoil who this character is since it sounds like you've never watched the anime yet. |

Higurashi is no doubt one of the longest things I've ever "played." As one user here noted, there's easily around 100 hours of content across the 8 main chapters.
Hell, I'm not even FINISHED with that yet. I'm still on the 8th arc. I started Higurashi back in June 2013, and haven't finished it yet. Granted, I've gone on long stretches without reading and life commitments have gotten in the way, but it's no stretch to say that this is one damn long game. Since I started Higurashi, I've seen the first season of the anime, read up to around where I am now in the manga, and have completed entire visual novels in-between. To newbies, I definitely recommend at least trying the first chapter. If that doesn't hook you by the end, nothing will. Really hope they included voice acting. At least the art and music has been updated though because the original sprites, while not as godawful as some people say, haven't held up all too well. |

I second that recommendation. In fact, I believe you can download the first chapter for free as a demo in the MangaGamer site (not sure if I can link it here, though, the site is very NSFW). Just make sure to actually finish the chapter. It starts really slow and not everyone likes it, but it really picks up the pace by the end. I really doubt there will be voice acting, though. If there was, MangaGamer would certainly announce it as a feature. Furthermore, I don't think voice acting is part of the original Hou release and MangaGamer doesn't have rights to the PS2/3 content. |

To answer the earlier questions it has already been confirmed that there will be a voice acting patch from fans that you can use on the steam release.

I'm shameless enough to link Higurashi's MangaGamer store page, but be aware that every page does include a Weekly Ranking, which shows the covers of all the currently best selling games, which can get pretty porntastic, though right now the only one that's NSFW is ImoPara.
