For anyone who's not clear, the first row has the novel illustrations, the second row the manga illustrations, and the third the anime designs. (Chart on the right only has manga illustrations on the first row, and anime designs on the second).

It appears that Kyoto Animation decided to keep the overall design for the 8 most important characters, while the side characters that only were illustrated in the manga suffered the most severe changes.

Also, I was under the impression that Sound! Euphonium was a series of novels, not light novels.

It seems that only the extra characters have undergone some major changes to their looks while the rest remained nearly intact.

Sound! Euphonium is a series of 3 novels not light novels so from what I was able to look up their is no images except on the covers only for the characters. If you look at the first row all the images are captured from the novel covers.

I actually like the final product from which the Anime went with every character is highly polished when compared to the source material and the Manga adaption. Besides has Kyoto Animation really let us down when they get a project to animate?

A lot of the Manga side characters designs where pretty plain and not distinctive enough to tell one apart from one another so with new hair dues they are easier to tell apart.

The band teacher's original appearance is hte only one I greatly prefer on the original. He went from normal looking teacher to cliche "hott" teacher.

Unlike standard novels, the Sound! Euphonium light novels do contain some images by illustrator Nikki Asada but the images focus on the series' main cast.

I understood that this is a regular novel series, not a LN one.

On a side-note, Kawashima Sapphire's illustration in the novel have her eyelids half-open, giving her a "I'm wasted" look. It gives me a good laugh every time I see it.

It is not LN because.....
1. Not published under LN label.
2, There are no internal illustrations.

There is no rule that standard (Non-LN) novels can't have character illustrations.

I don't know about "suffered", but yes it is far more dramatic for the side characters. Heck, freakin' Goto went from looking dorky to someone who look like he just came from Free! Laughing
