Oooo, free diving! Well, it's probably as close as getting an animated adaptation of Amanchu! Surprised

a television anime about a female free diver. He joked that the project might generate more interest than the Uru in Blue film project due to the main lead

An anime show about free-diving...
After having watched Daphne in the Brilliant Blue ages ago, I think I'll try my luck with this show.

What's the joke about? It's not like that's a veiled attack on the otaku of today or anything when Honneamise failed to find an audience in 1987.

Now if I read this correctly, this is perhaps the closest we can get for a female version of Free. Looks also interesting too. Cannot wait for more info.

They're obviously trying to ride on the popularity boom from the Ama-chan TV series:

The Disappearing Ama: Japan's Tough, Topless, Free-Diving Mermaids

https://www.quora.com/Why-did-the-TV-drama-Ama-chan-become-popular-in-Japan

  • Amachan is a daily 15-minute drama series that is broadcast on NHK (the "asadora" or morning drama). There been a new asadora series every 6 months for decades, but Amachan is the biggest asadora hit since Oshin in the 1980s*.

"Ama" is a female diver who dives into sea without an oxygen tank to harvest sea urchins, various types of sea weed and other types of sea food.

Expecting drop dead gorgeous art and backgrounds out of this. Plot could be anything tho. Slice of life, probably. Rolling Eyes

Except that, as noted in the article, this is a project that's been in development since at least 2009, when it was first mentioned publicly. Which isn't to say there's not some helpful synchronicity going on.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to this. Adding free diving to the Yamaga + Sadamoto combo makes this a must-see for me.

Hmf, by the title alone I thought they're gonna adapt Kozue Amano's Amanchu.
