For me, it was either OP of Beast Player Erin. This show was the longest '09 anime that I watched at 50 eps. Having seen the interactions that Erin had with the other characters and her struggles, I put it as being the best '09 anime.

Spice and Wolf II's "Mitsu no Yoake" was a Best of Year pick for me and would easily make my all-time Top 10 list for openers, so I'm happy to see it included. Its tone and visuals just so perfectly fit the tenor of the show and emotions at its core.
Also happy to see Cross Game's opener included, though I think its closer is better still. I will be very surprised if it doesn't make the Top 10 EDs of 2009 list. (And for maximum effect, it's best watched in conjunction with the entirety of episode 1.) The one commonly-mentioned exclusion that I could heartily agree with would be the A Certain Scientific Railgun opener, but that may fall too much into the kind of style that Hope was talking about being prevalent at that time. |

No you're right, it does (I believe the first time it plays is when Maria reads Beato's letter in the 1st game), but you stated that the version with lyrics is what played at the end of the 6th game, when it was actually Birth of New Witch that played. I just wanted to clarify things. |

I was actually kind of sad to find out that K-ON! didn't make the list, in general I usually skip the OP/ED of an anime mostly because I like to watch a large portion of and anime in one sitting (like 6 episodes at a time) so hearing that same OP two to three times an hour can really get stale fast, however K-ON! had one of the few OPs that I would not only watch every episode but sometimes play back two or three times before watching the show.
All in all 2009 was actually one of the biggest years for me when it came to anime I started moving away from the more common anime like BLEACH, Naruto, One Piece, and Inuyasha and started watching you know anime that you don't find on toonami or Saturday morning cartoons. That said most of the notable anime I watched that year came out well before 2009 such as gundam seed, but when it comes to OPs for 2009 I have to say K-ON, Railgun, and Saki for sure!! |

Well good luck with Umineko. Tried getting into that through the manga but it's purposefully labyrinth and convoluted. Narratives within meta-narratives within meta-meta-narratives.
At least with Type-moon stuff you can mostly ignore the giant lore. |

A couple songs that I wouldn't agree with, but just because they aren't really my taste. Particularly the Ali Project song from Book of Bantorra and the Phantom OP. I think I liked Ali Project somewhat when I first heard their specific style in Princess Resurrection, but as you said their stuff all pretty much sounds the same so once the "oh, this is different" kind of feeling went away I wasn't left with much.
Some people have mentioned a few songs that I'd include as some of my favorites of 2009 though, like A Certain Scientific Railgun and Needless. I definitely wouldn't put K-ON!'s OP on that list. That was an OP I'd skip every single time and just think it's a terrible sounding song. The ED on the other hand, Don't Say Lazy, is an ED I'd watch fully after every single episode. A couple other songs that might be worth considering: Valkyria Chronicles OP1 - "Asu he no Kizuna" - Himeka Maria Holic OP - "Hanaji" - Kobayashi Yuu Inuyasha Final Act - "Kimi ga Inai Mirai" - Do As Infinity Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor - "Tsukiakari no Michishirube" - Stereopony (I'm also just a big fan of Stereopony in general) Souten Kouro - "909" - Tribal Chair Souten Kouro is probably a show many never saw, or at least never finished as I don't think fansubs ever did finish this show. If they did they were awful ones filled with awkward english and grammar. But it's OP is a pretty great head-banging, hard rock song. Also as others have said, there's no need to bother with Umineko. Take that time and use it to watch Phantom or Cross Game, which are both far greater shows. |

I'l be honest, i was really, REALLY hoping that Spice & Wolf's FIRST OP would be in this list, as it's probably my favorite OP of all time. I seem to be in the minority in preferring it to the second, though.
2009 was the year i first started getting into anime, so most of these shows (actually i think all of them, besides Spice and Wolf?) I haven't seen. I enjoyed seeing those OPs and this list though, nice work |

I don't get what's so great about that Haruhi opening. Generic music and generic visuals. Probably because it's Haruhi and everyone creams themselves over anything Haruhi.

My picks are:
A Certain Scientific Railgun: I love this song. It's so uplifting and even though its years old it still sounds new. I'm not a fan of the show, I don't mind it but the songs are amazing for this series. Eden of the East: This song is really nostalgic reminds me of listening to Oasis on the radio. The show was okay, but I really enjoyed this song more. Sengoku Basara: I'm really surprised Hope didn't mention the vocalist, TM Revolution (Takanori Nishikawa), he does numerous anime openings from Soul Eater to Gundam Seed. Anyway, I love anything this man does side bands (Abingdon Boys School) and all. His vocals just are so inspiring and beautiful. Umineko: I love this song and all music by Akiko Shikata. She has this celtic vibe that sounds so fresh. When I hear her music I think of the sea. It works so well since she does the game's first OP and mirrors it well. Not only does it pack in emotion it gives nice hints of the story too. Nice to see hope noticed some clues from the lyrics, visuals, and language choices I'll jump on the don't watch Umineko train. Hope, I'd read the manga first or the VN first THEN watch that train wreck. Or not at all. If anything it's good for a good laugh. But it makes zero sense, isn't complete, and it doesn't do the source it any justice. It's so bad that they didn't even continue it. I swear they sold all those dakimakuras so people would want the Blu-rays. Last edited by grooven on Thu Jun 11, 2015 5:48 pm; edited 1 time in total |

It was nice to see the Eden of the East (original) OP on the list. One of those moments in anime where they used "a real song" (i.e. something in English released outside of Japan) as the theme song for an anime series.
I was going in my mind, "It would sure be nice if SenBASA's first OP would be somehow mentioned in this episode." Sure enough, when I saw #1, I was screaming and dancing for joy! Hope has excellent taste in 2009 Opening Theme songs. |

2008 tho. Side note, A Certain Scientific Railgun's OP definitely fell under the dated synth-baroque stuff that I didn't feel held up at all, so ya know, just different strokes. ^^; Last edited by JacobC on Wed Jun 10, 2015 11:03 am; edited 2 times in total |
