I think this has more to do with the Peoples Republic of China wanting to punish the Japanese and as a show of force to the Japanese, than anything to do with censorship.

I completely forgot about that - but now that you mention it, I do remember Wizards of the Coast had to edit a card so the skeletons had flesh for Magic the Gathering to get it sold in China, so maybe it is that important when it's a major character.
