I don't really like Gatchaman Crowds. I find the ideals of the show unrealistic and foolish, the shows characterization is very on and off, and the weird universal Moe love that appears in the show is a real annoyance. That being said, I wouldn't want Gatchaman Crowds to be any different from what it is. If this show didn't have the delicacy of a sledgehammer and presented a world were the populace is capable of basic cynicism, I wouldn't really like Gatchaman. Your write up does include all the different aspects that Gatchaman Crowds addresses, I personally don't think Gatcha addresses any of them all that well. Gatcha isn't a painful watch, but I often find myself annoyed with the experience. But, of all the different types of politically charged anime, whether it be Terror in Resonance or Gate, I would rather watch Gatchaman because it is an absolutely spectacular mess of a show.
Unrelated to the message of Gatcha, but the aesthetics of this show whether it be music or art design are beyond reproach. If no one talked in Gatchaman Crowds it just might be the perfect show! |

If only... If only... But seriously, the art direction in this show is phenomenal. |

Does the show ever mention the original Gatchaman in any fashion, or is it just a name?

I actually do like Gatchaman Crowds, but it is admittedly a very messy affair that is hard to piece together entirely when you're watching it week to week. It also doesn't help that the first season aired two years ago and I haven't done a rewatch since. So, I think this essay is a very good, much needed 'guide' to sorting out most of the ideas in a packed show, and I'm glad I have something like this to point to or reference when I am talking about Crowds.
I really wish the image links would open in a new tab by default, though. |

It's actually quicker to type alt-left-arrow than to close a tab. |

Well, that's very strange; right-clicking on the link should give you the option of -- among other things -- opening the link in a new tab &/or window. |

Oh, no, like I said, by default. I do right click the links to open them in new tabs. It's not actually that big a deal, sorry.

I think that Firefox allows it to occur by default, but I'm not certain. |

There's implications in show to there being previous Gatchamen, but it is very unlikely that said Gatchamen were the ones from the original show. The name is really just a carryover for marketing purposes. |

Nope (FF user here). I think it has to be written into the link format (target="_self" yields same window, target="_blank" opens a new window). The forums default to a new window, but articles don't seem to, unless the author sets it to do so, which most don't. Take that with a grain of salt, as I'm no html or bbcode expert. |

I figured. Didn't Crowds season 1 come out around that big live-action movie? |

I see Insight as a meditation on the nature of fascism, in particular its psychological and sociological roots. The populace is portrayed as more than willing to hand over decision-making power to a single individual ("let Gel-san do it") rather than dealing with the messy complications of conflict resolution in a putatively democratic state. I'm sure Gel-san could probably make the trains run on time; what s/he cannot do is manage conflict. Tsubasa expresses the naive view that everyone should just get along, but Hajime knows that is not only naive but contrary to human nature as well.
Fascism seems a popular theme in recent shows; both Kill la Kill and Samurai Flamenco are concerned with it as well. I'm guessing lefties in the anime industry (Nakamura seems a likely candidate) are uncomfortable with the rise of right-wing Japanese nationalism as expressed by the election of the Abe Government. For the opposing view in an anime context, watch The Legend of Koizumi. |

Once more, Nick, I thank you for introducing Gatchaman CROWDS, via your Top 30 list. Thank you very much.
Yeah, heard of Mussolini-kun. To quote something from that page: No thanks, I'd rather walk. |
