I think it is because the text color is not black. Apparently the "spoiler" black is not as opaque as we thought. Try it with other colors and see how it works.

If you are wondering why we can see "Mai HiME" I think that it is because of the font color, which is green because it is a link.

Alan45 beat me to it.
I think that the spoiler tag just makes the background black. Normally you do not see the text because it is black on black, but other colors can be seen.

spoiler[green red blue]

That is probably why emoticons in spoiler tags are visible spoiler[ Razz ]
