Or at the very very least use a responsible courier service instead of just shoving the manuscript in the corner mailbox.

But if they became overly reliant on that, it would be catastrophic if the artist had an outage in their area.

Do you actually know someone "just shoved the manuscript in the corner mailbox"? I think even a responsible courier service has the chance for some kind of mishap.

A manga artist may not have the tools or time at his disposal to scan every piece of artwork to submit it to the publisher. It's more efficient to have that equipment (and someone trained for the process) right in the publisher's office to take care of the multiple manga manuscripts to be printed each month/week. (also it sounds like this was background art, not finished pages, so I guess it was something drawn by an assistant/background artist working remotely?)

Well, then you don't rely on that too much too. Rolling Eyes

Or, you know, they could use a fax machine?

If the mangaka is drawing their entire manuscripts digitally and not using any traditional tools, can't they just stick the files in an email or send them digitally in some way?

Fax is abysmally poor quality, and very lossy. Not at all a good technology for sending anything apart from text.

With a bit of Money to help remember where the Order got lost, would be alrighty?

Perhaps it gone up in flames to be an lighter for someones cigars? or it was used to cut Onions at home? or got used in some public toilet without paper?

So many possibilities.. Smile

of course this was on the funny side

This sounds like a problem that could have easily been solved by digital technology. If the digital doesn't work then the physical should be the backup - not the other way around.

(I know you're just joking, but) Luckily it's only the background art.

Not all publishers are going to be operating with the same level of technology. Many manga authors are operating out of small apartment sized studios with minimal equipment. Some have even commented on having to use the copier at a local convenience store. They are likely to be located all around the country.

Trying to upgrade all those to a single level of technology would be a nightmare. It is likely beyond the financial capacity of some publishers. Not all authors are successful to warrant the expense of a high capacity line. They likely do not necessarily want to be tied to a single publisher.
