This is so sad Sad I remember that kawaii ambassador project, and it seemed like he had some really cool ideas about anime too.

He will certainly be missed. My condolences go out to his friends and family...

The accident took place on the Keihin-Tohoku platform, which as far as I recall is not fenced in.

And yes, this sort of thing happens on a regular basis in all cities with unguarded rail platforms. But sometimes it's just not feasible to install them everywhere.

To clarify, the Yamanote line platforms (2 and 3) at Nishi-Nippori station have platform edge doors, but not the Keihin-Tōhoku line platforms (1 and 4).

See:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nishi-Nippori_Station

and:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_screen_doors#Japan (and its corresponding Japanese wikipedia article which has more specific details on platform edge doors in Japan).

EDIT: It just seems risky having platform edge doors on one side of an island platform and not the other. Shouldn't they be on both sides or neither?

It's just so much of a loss when something like this happens Sad

Nishi-Nippori is one of the last few stations on the Yamanote-line that does not yet have the doors on the platforms to prevent exactly this kind of incident.

They've been installing them in all the major stations but they haven't gotten to all the smaller ones just yet... What a tragedy.

The platform barriers at Nishi-Nippori have been operational and working since at least June. However, there are no barriers on the Keihan Tohoku line platforms which is where believe he fell since there were still delays on the line the following morning.

Here is an image from Wikiepedia's page on Nishi Nippori-eki dated June 4th.

All stations on the Yamanote have barriers installed but not all are in operation and but should be by the end of the month. After Yamanote is done, the plan is to start adding to the Chuo-Sobu Line which has the highest death rate in the JR East system.

It's depressing to hear this news, especially given his efforts to trying to bring everyone together through culture. I dropped by his panels at Otakon a handful of times, but never stayed to fully watch, which I regret now.

There is a paragraph about him at the end of an article on the group "Hero 90's" formed from actors in Super Sentai series written by Mishio Suzuki in English: http://the-japan-news.com/news/article/0002668074.
