I don't know about this, I like the approach Shou Aikawa took with this show. This is his project, and what will the other writers do with it, maybe mess with it.

Is this show any good for a fan of surrealism and postmodernism like me? I usually like anime that denies convention in both storytelling and/or animation, and seeing how many writers are on board for a continuation I'm wondering if it would be worth catching up on, or if it would just feel kinda average. (I'm a fan of Ikuhara, Kon and Konaka, among others.)

For all I like the series, it's neither surreal (ED excepted) nor postmodern - there's no sense of unreliable narrators, unescapable subjectivity, questioning the text/genre, etc. Nor do events proceed in any particularly symbolic way - everything is told pretty literally (though not very straightforwardly due to skipping back and forth between time periods that matter to the story). It's interesting and has some things to say and some depth, but it isn't in the vein of Ikuhara, Kon, or Konaka.

You should give Oh! Edo Rocket a try. It's a science-fiction show set in an 1843 Edo with TVs, bullet trains, and the Internet. It also routinely breaks the fourth wall. One of my favorite examples is when one of the characters complains that a new cast member is "not on the website!"
