This is a spectacular plot review - easily the most insightful and informed discussion on the meaning of Evangelion that I have ever seen. To Mike Crandoll, I have this to say: congratulations for writing the spectacular, concise and intellectual exploration into the depth and meaning of this magnificent series that it deserves. As a fiercely dedicated fan of Evangelion, not merely as an anime series, but as a monumental work of cinematic art, it relieves me more than I can say to know that there are others out there who truly appreciate the brilliance and complexity of this story. To me, Evangelion is not mere fiction - it is (to borrow your word, Mr. Crandoll) a parable of the human condition itself. I am glad to finally see that there are, indeed, dedicated fans who treat this masterwork as such.
On a side note, it is notable that since the writing of this article, the Director's Cut edition of the TV series has become available, and included in it are a myriad of scenes which offer a huge amount of clarification to the plot. At this point, I believe, it is safe to say that the plot has been properly smoothed out, enough so to say that plot holes are no longer a shortcoming of the series. Of course, there is also the upcoming Rebuild of Evangelion films, which may yet add a whole new layer to the profound moral of the series. Either way, there is little denying it: Evangelion is not merely among the best anime of all times, but in my opinion, quite possibly one of the greatest stories ever told in cinema form. Here's to one of the most honest stories there is concerning the touchy topic of The Meaning of Life - that still manages to run a pet penguin as a recurring character.

You do realize this article is over 4 years old, right? As surprising as it is that no one ever bothered to post, this discussion has been brought up many, many times in the Anime forum since then. If you'd like, please carry your thoughts over (copy and paste) to that part of the forums, as you'll probably get more (or less) replies. Thanks.
