That's really neat! From the first image I can also spot a Gamecube (and controller), a PS1, a Dreamcast controller, a copy of the Japanese Metal Gear Solid, and what appears to be a Super Famicom (?). There's more in that pile too.

The film's already openly doing ads for bottled water, I don't think they need to throw in any product placement this subtle.

Is that not a Saturn laying forlornly beneath the Super Famicom? It appears that Shinkai wanted as many console cameos as possible.

Product placement is mostly done for brand awareness. As long as the brand still exists it's product placement. Not sure about wherever this was spotted, but this article, right here, is product placement.
