The most popular one is probably the one where you can date YouTubers. It's as awkward as it sounds. Unfortunately only the 'joke' VNs seem to catch on with American audiences who arent anime fans since they make prime Let's Play bait.

Mass Effect.

Tali is everyone's waifu. Except for Bioware who REALLY want you to be with Liara.

Mass Effect and maybe even Dragon Age are really the only western games that come to mind where relationships play a big part in the game. Maybe The Witcher 3?

And yes Tali is best girl.

Not "dating sims" necessarily, but there were old point and click games like Leisure Suit Larry that were pretty focused on sex/relationships. As a genre it's pretty well died out (at least in the AAA realm), though.

sakevisual's stuff is usually pretty decent. Staffed by all Americans as far as I could tell, except for the band they got to do the theme song of their most recent game and a French dude brought on to help with programming. They're not all white, though, if that's what you mean by "made by Americans". Rolling Eyes

Generally though, otome fans either find their stuff from fan translations or small indie stuff released on Steam. But yeah, since it's a genre that really only exists in Japan, there's not much in the US that's just dating--games like Stardew Valley usually have "dating sim" + some other game mechanic.

What, no mention of Katawa Shoujo here? Sure, it wasn't a traditional dating sim and I think there were some members of the team from other countries, but I still think it counts as being successful, western-made game in a way. That game was pretty (internet) popular a few years ago. I got incredibly attached to the characters, more than in most VNs i've played since. The subject matter was treated with a great deal of respect. For a free VN that was made just by a small team, i've seen how passionate the fans are and how the game actually changed some people's lives.

I wonder if Japan's overtly strict societal standards may be the reason why so many people there are single and have no interest in dating...

The economy being a dumpster fire isn't helping either. Japan is working on it's third Lost Decade and doesn't show any signs of stopping.

Well makes sense when you remember how sexualized Asari's are.....along with the fact you can actually see Liara's face.

Yeahhhh ya might want to avoid making statements like this without citing the necessary sources you got this notion from.

Yeah, off-topic political rants that have little-to-nothing to do with the article aren't needed. Those posts have been deleted.

Yeah, outside of Bioware, which wrap it up in other stuff, the west does not do
dating sims. (Which kinda stinks because Jack is probably way more interesting than half the cast of other sims.)

Did no one actually look at the CNN article? Or at the Japanese article CNN references?

First, while these dating sims are a $6b industry in Japan, they make equal amounts of money around the world including places like China and the US.

Second, the reason the number of virgins is so high is that the 18-19 year olds who are included are 75% virgins. The number drops steeply off in their early 20s and is around 25-30% by early 30s.

Third, the survey about virginity shows there has been little change in the numbers of virgins for each age group SINCE 1987. In other words, there's no link between the internet, dating sums, and these statistics.

Basically, all that's happening is that the women who are usually in this group are now happier because they're playing these games. This is a non-story.

I dated five Japanese women...they're undateable. They are cynical right into your face and they freak out once you tell them what you feel for them. The country and the culture itself embedded that for them. Dating sims and the "Idol culture" has dragged Japan into the worst social spectrum in the recent years. I've been telling this for years and everybody tell me that "it's not like that there" when it actually is. Japanese women are against sex for the way the culture and the media have been portraying it and that the way they're oppressed.
It's just easier to play a videogame of basic human needs so you can fulfill them over the screen than to go ahead and get the real thing. When in America a dating sim was ever successful? actually made in America with American programmers? Never...

Cause we go out and get the real thing.

So basically: AMERICAAA'S THE BEST!!! WE'RE FREE EVERYONE ELSE IS OPPRESSED!! AMERRRRRRICAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
