The anime Juliet has me confused, to the point that I'm not even sure if there could be two separate OVAs by that name.
Basically, Juliet is listed in the encyclopedia as hentai and as episode 10 of the Secret Anima hentai anthology. However, the anime was recently fansubbed, and the fansubbing group said it wasn't hentai despite what some sites claimed. I watched it, and it clearly wasn't hentai. While the anime has a lot of nudity, it has no sex whatsoever, and no images that would need to be censored to comply with Japanese law. Because what I watched clearly wasn't hentai, I started looking looking into it more to try to figure out why the encyclopedia has it listed as hentai and part of the Secret Anima anthology. The Anime Encyclopedia (the 2nd edition . . . I don't have the newer 3rd edition) has a relatively detailed entry for the Secret Anima series which lists it as only having 9 episodes and doesn't make any mention of Juliet (pages 570-571). It also has a separate very short entry for Juliet (page 316), which doesn't state that it is pornographic or related to the Secret Anima series, though the half-sentence long plot description suggests that the authors haven't actually watched it. There is also a long list of hentai anime on the Japanese Wikipedia, which lists the Secret Anima series as having only 9 episodes (search that page for シークレットアニマシリーズ). Those two sources both support that Secret Anima only had 9 episodes and that Juliet wasn't part of it. On the other hand, Allcinema has a page for Juliet that lists it as part of the Secret Anima anthology. The credited cast and roles on that Allcinema page matches with the three main characters from the credits of what I watched (other than that the Allcinema page uses the updated way of writing Kae Araki's name), suggesting that it is the same thing. Also, one of the sources given for the information on the ANN encyclopedia Juliet page, http://selection553.blog37.fc2.com/blog-entry-76.html (NSFW), lists an episode 10 of the Secret Anima series that is named Juliet. So both those sources would support that there was a Juliet OVA that was part of the Secret Anima series (and presumably hentai, since that is a hentai anthology). So anyway, those sources seem to contradict and leave me confused. In any case, what I watched would certainly not be considered hentai by any normal standards (again, there was no sex whatsoever), so I think there must be a non-hentai Juliet OVA. What I watched definitely goes with the page image currently at the encyclopedia page for Juliet. However, given the other sources, it would seem like there was a Juliet OVA released as part of the Secret Anima anthology, and the Allcinema page would imply that it is what I watched (or at least has the same voice actors playing the same roles). Could there perhaps be two OVA adaptations of the same work with the same cast, and every source is just mistakenly conflating them? Or could there be two versions of the same work, one hentai and one not? Or perhaps the OVA I watched was actually released as part of the Secret Anima anthology, despite not having content that would normally be considered hentai? I was hoping someone else could figure out what is actually going on, and update the encyclopedia appropriately. Regardless though, what I watched definitely wasn't hentai in terms of content, so my thought is that the encyclopedia should list the anime as not being hentai. Also, while I'm talking about issues with the Juliet encyclopedia page, the page currently has the anime listed with a release date in 1999, but both The Anime Encyclopedia and the Allcinema page list it as being from 1998. So I think the page should be changed to say it was released in 1998. |

I have to be bloomin' careful as I'm in work..
I have the 3rd edition which actually does describe Juliet ("this adaptation of a minor work by Sakura Diaries creator U-Jin...") as being "Episode #10 of the Secret Anime series" (although it is not impossible that the information was sourced from our encyclopedia). The Secret Anime entry also says "The final episode was Juliet (#10)".
Their disappointment in the OVA episode for Uta~Kata is clearly based on the pre-release blurb (like the plot summary on our own site) rather than having seen the episode, which is a pity since Wikipedia cites it as a negative. |

Actually, I'm the one (as the beta reader) who pointed out the mistake in The Anime Encyclopedia second edition. See the Secret Anima entry’s comment for the sources I used. If Juliet isn’t hentai, I can make the corrections.
