Akiba's Trip: The Animation (TV)

Genres: Action, Adventure, Supernatural, Ecchi
Themes:

Plot Summary: Set in Akihabara, the shopping area has been invaded by creatures known as "Synthisters" who prey on the patrons of Akihabara, feasting on their social energy and will to live. These enemies can only be stopped by direct exposure to sunlight, meaning to defeat these synthisters their clothes need to be ripped off exposing them to sunlight.
----------------------------------

Episode 1:

The opening song is kinda catchy I guess? Felt like a really mediocre start with the introduction of the characters.

Niwaka also has somewhat of an annoying voice and comedy felt so-so at the moment. Setting takes place at Akihabara and the main male protagonist already likes what it has to offer with the merchandise. Mayoka is slightly fun to watch though with that badass attitude of hers. Arisa is kinda cute I guess. Mayoka's presence in the show caught my attention the most so far. I took the whole fighting and action as more of a cheesy gimmick in this show than anything else at the moment.

RIP clothes. Pretty sure we'll see a lot of that for rest of the show.

Just because a show is dumb as rocks doesn't mean it can't be fun. I'm sold so far.

It's Trigger by way of Gonzo. Really reminds me of a lot of things... the not vampires from Sora, the... everything plus the kitchen sink... from Punchline... but it's just so tiring because it's trying too hard.

A total meatloaf show. Nothing special, but kind of comforting to consume. Panda imouto is cute. I can't swear I'll stick this one out to the end but I enjoyed it enough to continue watching for the time being.

Episode 1

Midway through the episode I paused it and spent way too long trying to figure out where I recognised the dog plushie from, I felt like my cred was on the line. If I continued it just a little further I would have had an easier time recognising that it was from Seiyu’s Life, and there does seem to be a connection, both have the same director, done by Gonzo, and it looks like the same voice actresses are involved. What I don’t think they share are the same sensibilities, it never felt like a female character was getting exploited in Seiyu’s Life, but apart from the stripping which seems to be a key part of this anime, there were the sounds of a cow when focusing on Arisa’s large breasts. Arisa so far has been a character I kind of liked, a foreign character who seems strong and geeky, large breasts are even fine for a character if it is not the only thing defining them, and also hopefully not make her stupid.

The other two female main characters look good too, the pink haired looks able if the show does not try to mess with her too much, and his sister is cute. I think that the problem can be embarrassment, it just feels off if female characters are feeling embarrassed as they are getting stripped, which I thought was the case earlier in the episode, but maybe it will grow as long as that is not the case. The cosplaying thing could be fun if stays creative. For the male lead, well he looks okay, I did like how he brushed off the person harassing him. I thought the brutal parts of the episode like how the girl lead was getting beaten up and the male lead got stabbed, the part where he could not finish his like was actually one of the few jokes I liked from the episode.

Episode two: Electric Mayhem, uh, Mayo.

... that's about it. This is going to be harder than I thought it would be and I may not make it. Also, I'm pretty sure the show's insulting its audience somehow but I can't quite put my finger on it...

A paraphrase:
"spoiler[I'm going to die soon? Well then I better get two jobs so I can buy all the crap that will fulfil my life.]"

It's subtle.

Episode 2

Okay, the second episode might have been better. It feels more aware with how it is playing with its concept, and we have a bit of even amount of gender. And my favourite character in the show is indeed Arisa, she just feels like a fun character. She had the most fanservice including nudity, but in general it did not come with any yells of embarrassment, she wears a bunnygirl outfit for the hell of it and she has her own geeky habits. Also liked how she called the short girl out as a tsundere, but mistakenly said “yandere”.

Also a slight call out to limitations. It is pretty obvious they kept reusing the same animation every time the big guy hit the small guy for saying something obvious, but rather than cheap it actually feels like a joke, this is how an anime can use limitations to its advantage. In general it feels like this show is kind of using its lower quality as a style. I can see continuing.

Not that it's revolutionary for an anime to be meta about anime, but I still enjoyed the dig at anime fans re: how "serious" otaku look down on "casual" otaku who they see as mere trend followers instead of viewers who have a deep knowledge of a genre.

And I didn't even mention the Indian of Indian doctors... Dr. Vinda Loo, eat your heart out... because I couldn't figure a decent way to Segueway into it. I can't decide if it was racist {funny} or racist {racism}.

The dub would have scored bonus points if we heard a voice intone "India" when she appeared. But I suppose you'd need a little graphic of a plane to land the joke.

Episode 3

I liked the even more Earphones reference, from the audio ears, and the three girls wearing the Earphones uniforms. I would not have caught onto the gag with the location they were doing their shoot unless I had seen Shimoneta which used it in its how to segment, it is where a lot of porn is filmed. Extra funny how Arisa was made the note that she would have nothing to fall back onto when her career starts to go south. Tomotsu also a big idiot, like how he acts so knowledgable on her performance despite just getting into her.

And the thing that made the idol which Tomotsu got hooked on was how expressionless she was and how out of tune, much better than if the show tried to do it straight. And have to wonder about Arisa’s wardrobe, a devil outfit and an eggplant costume showed up in the episode, awesome. His sister also swapped out panda accessories for frog.

Yep, the piss-taking continues. This episode it was directed at audiophiles and the idol industry. The audiophile stuff was bang on: nothing is more annoying then one of those twits who is chasing the "perfect" sound. This show has turned out to be a pleasant surprise. I thought it was just going to be a fanservice-y romp, but the satire/parody/spoof stuff has been great.

Episode 4

What was kind of great with how they solved the situation was how I kind of got where they were going when the strange order to get more garlic chicken was made, like whether they were really fighting "evil radio waves" by covering themselves in aluminium. Of course they totally did it, and I also liked the gag of being so wasteful with

One of the great things about the professor is how after finding out, I can't help but think of Kate from Zvezda, and the mix of little girl and totally not is funny. All the weird things about her character, like specifically saying a vague amount of years back with flashback camera without colour and a bit of vague period technology. Her not looking any different, but implying that the faceless yet buff male professor has aged.

I do think the show has moved up to me liking it so much.

They were spot on with the audiophile segment last week. A lot of audiophile do believe in the whole 24-bit 192kHz audio mentioned in the show. A very knowledgeable guy that works with Xiph debunked this years ago, but it obviously hasn't stopped the audiophiles from believing whatever they want.

The same goes for the funky shaped speakers and the magic stones and ion-beam mist generators. Even the brief mention of installing your own utility pole actually happened in real life.

And now this week they're covering Ham Radio. They're really going all out with the crazy Akiba-related stuff, not just limiting things to anime.

Which is awesome - easily one of my favourite parts of the show. Makes me wonder each week which particular strain of Akiba-otakudom will be highlighted. I have a feeling that fujoshi are going to be in the cross-hairs at some point.
