Surely, wanting to attend an event related to an anime one loves is natural and not a bad thing? O rather, let me rephrase that - surely, they wouldn't be so desperate to attend the event if it weren't for their love for the actual show?

It's not a stupid event either; it will feature the writer for the series (Kubo Mitsurou) and many of the seiyuu, including the main cast. Japanese fans love those things, hell, I LOVE THOSE THINGS, I really don't think it's weird that they'd want to attend an exclusive event for which one can only get tickets through applying through the sheet that comes with the DVD/BD volumes.

We'll see how volume 3 does and if the sales drop much when their is not event-based incentive though.

PS: Japanese fans don't care that they're overpriced, as proven by the sale numbers lol.

I get what you're saying, but my point was more that they even need to include those a incentives in the first place, as otherwise anime volumes usually don't sell nearly as much. Like, so first volume sales don't usually give a good impression of how many people bought it just for the show, but mostly for the event thing. And the sales end up being really frontloaded, and later volume numbers aren't nearly as good. Maybe I'm not expressing my point well enough, I dunno. I didn't really mean that the events were stupid, that's just my nonchalant and dismissive nature bleeding into my posts. If i could go to an event featuring the staff behind an anime I really liked, I'd be totally willing to buy an overly expensive disc to do so.

I think those 'incentives' are there more in order to justify the price. The BDs/DVDs usually also feature some special video footage and artbooks and often stickers or some other form of merchandise. I don't think that's a bad thing - it's like buying the collectors edition. And again, if those little incentives are enough for people to want to buy something so expensive then I think that only proves that they do really care for the anime and stuff related to it.

I get what you're saying but if people wouldn't like the show itself then they sure as hell wouldn't be buying the discs just for the little extras.

The event tickets are incentives for people to buy and without a doubt lead to higher sales. It remains to be seen if Yuri!!! on Ice's very high volume 1 and 2 sales are in part due to people buying multiple copies of the DVDs in order to get more event tickets. I would think people buying multiple copies would pertain more to DVD as opposed to BD sales due to the price difference. In some cases, it's actually worth buying multiple volumes if you want a high chance of getting into an event as resale prices of the event ticket codes on Y!J can get upwards of 1/2-3/4 of the DVD price (sometimes more). So people buy several copies, keep the code, and resell or turn in extra DVDs.

In the case of Love Live!, especially Sunshine!!, Volume 1 was half the price of subsequent volumes because it had one episode. It wasn't AS expensive to buy multiple copies of the discs to get those event tickets so Volume 1 sales saw a HUGE spike compared to later volumes.

It's kind of sad that seemingly the main incentive for people to buy these overpriced volumes isn't the actual shows themselves but rather some stupid event tickets.

Home releases often come with bonuses and extras. Event tickets are just one example., others include CDs, bonus disks, and other supplimentary materia. Home video releases aren't made for everyone, they're made for the hardcore collectors who drive the market. And hardcore fans are going to be the ones that care about going to events about their favorite show, nothing really wrong with that.

Saying a show has a large female fanbase is not the same as saying that it's only popular due to women.

Good thing "large female fan base" wasn't what was said, then.

YOI is not a 26 episode series, for starters. (Are we now admitting that Osomatsu-san's popularity is due to women?) The big drop will probably hit around volume four--volume three will see a mild drop.

Volume 4 will be the volume with THE KISS though, so I doubt that 'big drop' will hit until maybe vol 5 (then again, that's the one with eps 9 and 10, both of which were brilliant and beloved by the community). Maybe there will be no drop after all? Smile

Actually your premonition is right, right now the big drop of YOI will or may start between Vol.3 to Vol.4 considering the recent Avex Ban. YOI along with Osomatsu is Avex's highest international brd/dvd volume sellers and banning the import will mostly affect it.

Oricon's estimates supposedly do not count international sales, so their numbers will not be affected.

Looks like it was only the Amazon LE edition that had any sort of stock issues, so I was incorrect about that. Well, then YOI certainly has a chance for another 10k+ week 2, but I'm really looking at how vol 3 will do without the live event to see if there's any major drop (beyond the typical 25-30% we typically see).
o
If you're still curious, vol3 week1 had an 8% drop. (Which isnt too far off (only a little lower) from what stalker predicted if it had similar underestimation to v1 and v2)
