Mashima does have a record of letting other authors work on side stuff, he supervised the spinoff about Young Gray (Ice Trail) as well as the Wendy Spinoff (Blue Mistral) and the Fairy Girls spinoff. |
I wonder if these spinoffs will get animated whenever they get around to doing season 3. It would be a good way to expand the anime without having to come up with original material.

Serious question; how many mangakas with the level of success of Mashima's Fairy Tail, have had more than two hits? i"m interested to see where Mashima goes from here, but the perception I have is that you only get two hits, with nothing else they do meeting the same success, or more importantly similar quality. The past projects tend to loom over their works.
I think FT's success is somewhat remarkable because of the fact that there have been so many Rave fans that were quick to rag on it, wishing he'd go back to Rave. That said, I'm looking forward to seeing what sort of new world he will delve into, the characters we'll see emerge from it.

So he's going to make the doujins he always wanted to now, right?

I think most Rave fans were quick to rag on FT because Mashima pulled so many elements from Rave (from characters, to magical elements, to plot points) that he might have been better served making a sequel a proper sequel to it. Hell in the early stages of Gray's development they thought about making him the 10th Rave Master.
Either Mashima or his editors really didn't want to let that series go.
As for where he goes next, i enjoyed that Starbiter Satsuki one-shot he did a couple of years ago. Id like to see a continuation of that story if he was interested in doing it.

Neither Rave Master nor fairy Tale ever did much for me i'm afraid, however I do respect a creator who can hold down a long running series and still find the energy to keep rolling once it's folded.
Good luck to Mashima, I say.

Rumiko Takahashi comes to mind. Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha are all hits to one degree or another, especially the latter two. Their most recent title, Rinne, not so much admittedly.
I do hope to see a third season of the anime, and I wouldn't mind seeing new stuff from Mashima either. He isn't my favorite, even among Shonen mangaka, but I've liked Fairy Tail well enough.

I am interested to see what he does after. I like Rave as a kid, but looking back it's really not that special from what I remember. Fairy Tail is... something, so it will interesting to see where he goes from this.

I'd like an anime reboot of Rave Master.

Toei tried it with One Piece, animating the side stories told in parallel to the main ongoing story, but they bombed in the ratings, and Toei got scared off from doing any more of them again (even though some of the later ones are plot-important)

As far as quality goes, I would say that all three of Kouhei Horikoshi's series are good, even though of those, only My Hero Academia took off. In addition to zrnzle500's mention of Rumiko Takahashi, Hiroyuki Takei has actually had more than two hits, though he's remembered mainly for Shaman King. Yoshihiro Togashi is infamous for his hiatuses, but he was quite prolific in his earlier years: In addition to Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter X Hunter, he wrote the well-liked Level E, which was intended to be short from the start. Kazue Katou's magnum opus is undoubtedly Blue Exorcist, but she has drawn some well-liked single-chapter stories from time to time (though I'm not sure if that counts). Shotaro Ishinomori had a history of long-running success beginning with Cyborg 009 and ending with The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
I think the lack of manga authors with two or more successes (whether you count that in terms of readership or quality) is due to the sheer length of their successful ones, in that they might not have the stamina in their lives to do more than two. (Heck, Masashi Kishimoto grew sick and tired of the system after finishing Naruto and is currently completely burned out.) Some of them have become celebrities after two series (such as Akira Toriyama after Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball). And some fall victim to "tough act to follow" (like Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata with Death Note and Bakuman, though Platinum End is doing well enough to avoid cancellation). A lot of authors have just finished or are wrapping up their second successes (like our example Hiro Mashima, and also Jinsei Kataoka and Kazuma Kondo (Eureka Seven and Deadman Wonderland), Yuusei Matsui (Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro and Assassination Classroom), and Tite Kubo (Zombie Powder and Bleach--well, I'd call it good enough if you can go on for four volumes)).

I'd be happy with other Fairy Tail projects, such as other side stories and novels. Flaws and all, I love Fairy Tail and I hope to see it continue to live on for a little while longer.

I'm of the mind that once Fairy Tail wraps up, Mashima should take the Masamune Shirow approach and just draw porn.
I mean, he'd be good at it, considering some of the pinups he frequently posts on his Twitter.

It was expected for a long time Mashima had tons more stories to tell after Fairy Tail was over. People forget Naru and Natsu are also the names of Japanese seasons. So surely the next manga will be all about someone named Aki.
As for him continuing the story of Fairy Tail, of course. Mashima introduced us to a huge world, full of interesting characters. So there is lots of potential. Especially if he decides to dwell more into the fanservice. Just a matter of managing his time and drawing up interesting stories.

I never forgot. I never knew. But based on Mashima's statements in the past, he is a man with a mountain of energy and a workaholic, so I kind of expected him to be planning something else after Fairy Tail.
