This is late, but I did end up watching the movie, and here are my thoughts.

Here comes Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You, a retelling of how Ash's journey first began. Everyone's really excited about it.. But not a lot of fans ended up being happy about it.

I was one of them. In my opinion, the movie sucked. Really really sucked. For one thing, Misty and Brock are absent from the movie and have been replaced with characters with background stories that are extremely depressing for a Pokémon movie. Another thing that really ruined the movie was when Pikachu talked near the end. I know it was supposed to represent their heartfelt bond (one of the closest anime friendships since Doraemon and Nobita), but it was just totally unnecessary.

If you want to watch how Ash began his Pokémon journey, watch the first few episodes of the show on Netflix.
