The anime began and ended with bakeneko—the final arc of Ayakashi was Bakeneko in the Edo era, and the last arc of Mononoke (the train arc) was also Bakeneko, but in a later time period.

Nakamura's direction and story-telling is so kinetic that I find it hard to imagine it coming across well on the printed page. Yes, there are many quiet moments throughout the stories, but I found the animated supernatural defenses and conflicts very compelling. I can't imagine static images having the same impact.
