This is a tough one as they can usually be entertaining. I guess, probably Cromartie High School.

Worst ones are easy for me: Yuru Yuri, Love Hina, and Kanamemo.

Most of the comedies that suit my tastes have been mentioned - among my favorites in no particular order being Saint Young Men, Detroit Metal City, Daily Lives of High School Boys, Tanaka-kun, Merman in My Bathtub, Tsurezure Children, School Rumble, Konosuba and Devil is a Part-Timer. I'd also add Hetalia, Handa-kun and The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. Though they're not my cuppa, I'm kind of surprised not to see more people including Prison School and Shimoneta, since I thought they were pretty popular. And yay! someone else mentioned Peeping Life! Very Happy

My worst list would include Ping Pong Club (which I only watched as much as I could stand because I was curious to hear Crispin Freeman in it), Watamote (too depressing), and Ranma (I've tried 3 times to watch this and finally gave up). I haven't actually finished any of those, but I got farther than some other titles that were so terrible right out of the gate I didn't make it through an entire episode.

4/7 bests I've personally loved. Guess I should stop being surprised at how much of an otaku I am.

As far as gag dubs, I like Samurai Pizza Cats but wouldn't call it a comedy anime, if that makes sense.

My personal favourite is Hataraku Maou-sama!. Orenchi no Furo Jijou is the first short I ever gave a chance to, so it's got a special spot in my heart, and I'm always willing to tune into anything involving Takamatsu humour (bar Gintama, which is too dirty for my tastes).

Sometimes I questioned why I watched Osomatsu-san the first time I saw it, so a rewatch of some of the later episodes made me realise I just didn't want to sign on for more (even though season 2 is around the corner). I find the best part of Osomatsu-san is definitely when it does outlandish parodies of other properties, but the amount of times it does that is rare (I'd assume that is partially because of the controversy around the original eps 1 and 3 in Japan).

It's good to see Classicaloid pop up in this discussion. I really enjoyed that (as much as it's meant to be aimed at kids), so of course I'm ready for season 2.

My worst would be Denpa Kyoushi. I didn't laugh at what I saw of it and Suzune is just plain mean (even though she's meant to be tsundere, and you know how it is with tsunderes and inflicting violence for "humour" Rolling Eyes ).

@Gina Szanboti As a Shimoneta fan, I believe many find it's humor tarnished by it's sexual nature. I don't think of it as an out-and-out comedy because of the dramatic overtones in the story but it has some delightfully funny moments, like Ana's Love Nectar Cookies Shocked and bloodhound nose for Okuma-kun's underwear, Gouriki's involuntary vomit-inducing underwear, etc.

For best comedy, I'm not sure OVAs count but Project A-ko (old-school division) had me laughing from start to finish even with repeat watching. In the "recent" division, again not sure if unintentional humor counts, but I love coming back to Big Order for laughs with Mr Beckett's favorite "weapon" Fish Gun and Rin's terminally stupid failures at assassination. So bad I can't take any part of it seriously, which makes it's overtly serious drama funnier. Azumanga Daioh is my legitimate comedy favorite (love Dokuro-chan too!).

Nichijou has a special place in my comedy panthaeon, funny and delightful in every way and underappreciated because I think a lot of people didn't "get it" the way a number of people here do.

For worst "comedy" I think of Puni Puni Poemy. Couldn't get through Ep1, kept thinking "is this supposed to be funny?"... blegh. Runner-up In Another World w/my Smartphone, insufferably boring, so dull nothing is funny.

My favorite is definitely Daily Lives of High School Boys, partially because it's just great, but also partially because now I have a show I can point to and say "See?! THERE is a show that really 'gets' guys."

Although yes, I certainly agree that Polar Bear Cafe was great, as is Detroit Metal City. Dragon Half is also one of the greats of old(er), just a shame it only got two episodes.

As for the worst, I'd have to sit down and think that over, but any show that tries its comedy with girls who are intentionally violent and/or abusive towards its male characters gets on my list. It has to be intentional, though, so shows like Monster Musume doesn't count, nor does Daily Lives of high School Boys, because that show basically puts a huge-ass lampshade over that particular trope. Baka and Test, however, does in a big way, as does Dokuro-chan. And hey, here's Love Hina being the big trendsetter in this idiocy.

Honestly aside from Dokuro-chan and Green Green the choices for worst are just... puzzling. In a 'Of all the shows you could pick, why that one?' kind of way. I know comedy is hugely subjective and all but... Oreimo? Umaru? Come on now, surely you guys could dig a bit deeper than that.

Anyway, I know it's not totally comedy centric but for my worst I have to pick Akame ga Kill. Like a lot of bad anime comedy it's really lame, not that clever and heavily reliant on tropes like the gay panic moment and the lead bursting into a room while a girl is changing. On top of said comedy being bad even by lowbrow anime comedy standards, its placement and execution is really awkward. It's so detrimental to the serious tone they're trying to build in other scenes that it's not even funny (No pun intended). Future Diary had a very similar issue (And is all around a much worse series) but I think it annoys me just that little bit more in Akame ga Kill.

Also worth mentioning Cuticle Detective Inaba and Yuru Yuri. I wouldn't say they're deeply awful, they're just really... lame.

For best I'm gonna have to agree with Cromartie High School. I just love how it's this amazingly surreal comedy series about juvenile delinquents who, instead of getting into trouble and picking fights with people, just end up getting into long winded discussions about the most trivial things. Plus the dub is just fantastic.

Nichijou, Azumanga Daioh, School Rumble and Daily Lives of High School Boys would be very close runner ups. Baka & Test, D-Frag and No-Rin aren't anywhere near as clever as them but for some reason they also tickled my funny bone. The comedy in K-On! is definitely up there too but I just think there's so much more to the show than its comedy.

Honourable mention: High School DxD. Not a funny show, but Funimation's dub was absolutely hysterical. Shame about... you know who getting in trouble with the law. I prefer Josh Grelle as Issei though so I'm not too fussed.

Wow, didn't think someone would agree with me on Yuru Yuri.

I just find it frustrating cause for a while it seemed like every time I didn't care for a cute show I got accused of being this MANime dudebro. Which I always found weird considering K-On! was my gateway drug to anime.

It's just so boring and by the numbers. I'm glad I didn't bother with Season 3.

Best, in date order:
Akazukin Chacha
Polar Bear Cafe
Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!

Worst, in a sense, is Gintama. Some of it is funny, which keeps me watching, but some of it is painful.

Picking even a top five was proved quite difficult but after a bit deliberation I decided my favourites were (starting from #1):
The Devil is a Part-Timer!, Gintama, Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun, Baka and Test - Summon the Beasts and Senyuu..

The two comedies I really didn't find funny were Squid Girl and Yakitate Japan.

Best... bloody hell, that's a hard one to call. Half the shows people have mentioned here (including some people give as their worst) I could call my favourite, depending on the kind of mood I'm in. If I absolutely had to name one right now... Daily Lives of High School Boys.

As for worst, that's a much easier call. A (deservedly) unknown show called Don't Leave Me Alone Daisy. Absolutely terrible.

So many comedies, and all so subjective. And then there are shows with comic elements, and you have to decide which side of the balance predominates. I'd call Tenchi Muyo a comedy, and I've always loved that.

My favourite comedy hands down has to be Nichijou, it's peerless, hilarious, and inspired. It's a proper sketch show, in that some sketches fall flat, but I'm still carrying over laughter from the previous gag when the Helvetica Standard bits come on, which go over my head. It's the Fast Show of anime.

Many of my other faves have been mentioned, shows like Ouran, Azumanga Daioh, Gintama, K-On! Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun, Watamote, School Rumble, Slayers, Tonari no Seki-kun, Good Luck Girl, Yamada's First Time, Humanity has Declined, Oedo Rocket, and Squid Girl, and One Punch Man

I have a soft spot for Love Hina simply as it was the first harem anime I watched.

Some that haven't been mentioned yet that I laugh at.

Love Lab It's got a simple premise that it takes to absurd extremes, got the DVD for $5 on a TRSI clearout, watched it, loved it, bought the Blu-ray around full price straight after.

Hyakko, Toradora, The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, Bamboo Blade Dai Guard, Niea_7, High School of the Dead, Genshiken, Princess Jellyfish, The World God Only Knows, Mayo Chiki, Cat Planet Cuties, Arakawa Under the Bridge, Mysterious Girlfriend X, Dusk Maiden of Amnesia, Tsuritama, Kill Me Baby, Nyan Koi, The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors & Hostel Behaviour, and Servant X Service.

I love all these shows for the comedy...

I have an odd relationship with Nabeshin shows. The first time I watch them I laugh, the second time I smirk, and the third time is the last time before I dump them. He's a one trick pony. The outlier is Tenchi GXP, which gets by on the Tenchi connections. I also have high hopes for Nerima Daikon Brothers, which while I have only seen it once, felt more structured and consistent than something like Excel Saga.

I have never, ever laughed at Cromartie High School. It just felt so pretentious.

But the unfunniest thing I have ever seen is Hetalia. No redeeming features whatsoever, and a wholly offensive dub.

It's good to see Amagi Brilliant Park get some love. I honestly hadn't laughed so much at a comedy show in years. The LE release was also awesome and one of my favorites.

My least favorite is one that I had actually blocked out until I saw it in the comments here. My Bride is a Mermaid is the single most unenjoyablr anime I've have ever watched. It's not even entertaining in the "so bad, it's good" sort of way. I found myself hating every single character. Not to mention, I absolutely despise the English dub. It actually makes the cast even more unlikable and annoying. The Japanese version is almost tolerable, though still not funny, but the English is just unwatchable. In the half dozen episodes that I watched, I didn't laugh even once. I guess I should be glad that I bought it out of the bargain bin at Right Stuf and didn't pay much for it.

I guess English dubs are just like comedies. Everyone has a different taste. Wink

Love Hina has my favorite cutaway gag of all time though. A news clip of what is clearly Godzilla tearing through a Japanese city that may well be Tokyo. The clip ends with the newscaster saying "... and in other news." No, no, there is no other news, go back to the monster attack. This was part of Love Hina's excellent travelogue episode which is essentially "The girls of Love Hina versus Japan". I also love the introduction of Otohime in the previous episode, one of the great "lost to time" anime characters. The series sadly falls apart after that, thanks to outpacing the manga and lots of dead space and filler.

Green Green... I like that one too. It's a high school sex comedy where the last episode is straight up porn. I wouldn't pick it over Yamada's First Time but I don't have to, there is room on my shelf for both. Is it good? It's stupid but that's not a bad thing for a comedy. Stupid, ugly, crass, sexist... stupid, ugly, crass, sexist is Green Green.

Eiken: Follow the bouncing.... ball.
The girls of Eiken are frightfully endowed
With chests that heavy, they have to walk bowed
And then one day
one of their bras gave way
...

I have to say she made a wonderful plow? No...
With one mighty heave, she took out the crowd? Closer, maybe...
It makes you wonder why nudity wasn't allowed. Honestly, that one.

I have the other two on DVD but I don't have Eiken. I have considered buying it but I'm just not that much of a fan of two episode series. Still not one of the worse comedies I've ever seen as its own sense of absurdity made me giggle a few times.

I'm still waiting to see if Lucky Star comes up anywhere. "Lucky Channel" kept it from my worst list, too unfunny to make... no, wait. Just "too unfunny". Where is the punchline indeed...
