Well.... Neither "bara" nor "men's love" has a consistently accepted meaning in Japan, so it's not necessarily actively wrong to call Sakira's work either, but since in Anglophone usage both terms imply gei comi (gay men's manga), it is at least misleading, since all of the work I can find from her is BL....

This is not the first time DMP has commissioned original manga (presumably to avoid piracy issues), but their previous attempts weren't notable successes, so we'll have to see how well it goes.

My understanding is that bara is stuff for gay men written by gay men, and usually the characters are the muscular type.

I sure hope their editing in the final version will be better than this......

Yes. Did you happened to hear of their “yabara” (yaoi + bara) kickstarter trying to do an indie LGBT comic earlier this year? They did not do a good job with the yaoi In These Words years ago either.

People have been complaining about DMI’s verbiage for awhile pointing out how some of the terms they use in marketing are confusing. Or don’t work so well and may offend some of the audience they want to attract.

They just use “bara” to describe a style of characters in the more muscular, masculine sense over almost androgynous pretty boys. As they put it “SAKIRA specialize in BARA type yaoi which involves handsome masculine men with lots of smut.”That usage has been slowly gaining traction. Juné had it on bracelets for the last Sakira Kickstarter too. I wouldn’t wear one but, to each their own. Sakira describes herself as a BL artist. Her writing is exactly that to me, kind of a parody sometimes maybe but still BL. She's even been concerned before if her stuff was too uncensored then it was just porn.

So maybe change the description ANN?

Agreed. It's not bara. But I can also see DMP trying to come up with a marketable term. Those things usually are better created by the readership, though I can handle "yabara." There is a readership that likes the beefier guys within the yaoi and BL framework, and it would be nice to have an easier term to use to locate those works.

Sakira is not afraid to go there. Smile "Parody" is a good term. Also, if she had a tagline it'd be "No boundaries. No rules." She will write pretty much any scenario, weird, wacky sexy fun times to blurred lines of consent to earnest and sincere romance. I do love her art style, so I'm glad to see more English releases.

Thank you all for the feedback. Yes, we used bara because of how DMP described her work for the Kickstarter. We've changed the description.

The more appropriate term is geikomi, and not that they're always muscular. Within that demographic/genre, there's muscle, chubby, muscle-chubby. (There may be others I don't remember? I feel like it?)

That's some gorgeous, sexy art. I haven't really followed ny BL or geikomi recently, but this has my interest. I'm considering Junko's title too, since I've been enjoying KH,NM. I'll enjoy the art at least.

Works for me. I'm always for more yaoi. Especially if it's by Sakira
