Sounds like it might actually be a sequel. What would a 2018 kid think about ancient tech like "video cassette recoders"?

It had a slightly surreal (and rather unnecessary) ending, but it was generic romantic comedy material prior to then. I am rather surprised that they found a way to keep the original's premise intact, given the changes in home video technology over subsequent decades.

Giving the series age, I could see it justifiably being updated to have DVDs/BD/DVRs instead of VCRs.

I was sure they'd change it to Youtube!
If Cowboy Bebop can do Beta, Video Girl Ai Live Action 2018 can do VHS.

Jumanji 2 can be set from a board game to a video game, why cant a VHS go digital I am looking forward to the new Video Girl Ai live action. I still have all the manga.
