"Burny!!" is listed as an ENDING theme in the encyclopedia. If it's an OPENING theme, I'll gladly add it. Thanks for the tone though, super helpful.

It does appear to actually be the first of the OPs in-show. For some reason all 4 of the OPs are listed as EDs in the encyclopedia. Confused

Watched Plastic Little, watched Legend of Lemnear.

I'm a die-hard Satoshi Urushihara fan. Anything made by that man I will read and watch. ANYTHING!

His art is pure eye candy! Very Happy

I love Video Girl Ai -- the anime Cyrano de Bergerac

Really? How do those to stories compare? Who in Video Girl Ai has a long nose, a disfigurement, or some kind of quality that them feel unattractive? Or is it that they are both stories about unrequited love? I failed to notice that part since I haven't read that classic French tale myself.

I couldn't have described it better myself. It is a cute-'n-screechy voice that only Megumi Hayashibara-san could make that doesn't irritate me and I personally love hearing it every time.

That is a weird comparison; I wasn't aware how far Cyrano fell out of public consciousness. Yes, there's a man with a huge nose but the main thrust of the work is that benosed man woos his fair lady through a good looking proxy with his own words. Think Roxanne with 100% less Steve Martin. Oh spoiler[and he dies in the original work]. His Fair Lady...

Pygmalion? Or maybe Katsura watched Weird Science on VHS one night and had a bad dream. Probably that one...

Perhaps you should. There have been a number of adaptations over the years, only one of which (Steve Martin's Roxanne) adopts the literal disfigurement of Cyrano's nose. In The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Abby is just insecure about her appearance. Electric Dreams' Edgar is an accidentally sentient AI running on a personal computer -- a clearer precedent for Ai.

Video Girl Ai is about as close as anime gets to adapting this story, but it splits the roles. Ai is not only a "video girl" -- unworthy of a "real" relationship -- but a broken one as well. She sublimates her feelings by assisting Moteuchi in winning his real girl, Moemi. "Dateless" Moteuchi, in turn, is sublimating his feelings by supporting Moemi's attempts to win the handsome Takashi.

If anyone has a better suggestion for the anime adaptation of Cyrano, though, I would be very (and quite unsarcastically) interested to hear it.

If my memory serves me correct without the aid of Google a lot of these on the list were released state-side courtesy of ADV and it's other specialized brands . At the time in the early 90s you would have probably known about some of the more obscure OVAs simply because they were shown as trailers in titles you would have commonly bought. And if anyone who was an anime fan in the days of VHS tapes will tell you you absolutely watched every preview put on a tape. If anything that was more a "catalog" than anything physically offered.

The issue for a lot of stateside viewers were 1) you didn't exactly know what was an OVA at the time unless you were extremely hardcore knowledgeable on OVA releases and 2) pricing structures for OVAs didn't really lend themselves to be bought in large numbers when they immediately released due to the relatively short run times and the not overly subsequent quality of production. It can't be stated enough how much of a waste Debutante Detective Corps was. The only major thing I remember about Princess Rouge is that the dubbed VAs were the same that did Keiichi and Belldandy for AnimEigo's release of the Ah! My Goddess OVAs.

He's a lot more famous for his anime related porno doujinshi stuff, though.

Here is a plate of virtual cookies for remembering "Electric Dreams". Anime catgrin
(Someday, we'll conquer 80's-soundtrack music rights and get it on legitimate DVD/Blu.)

If you want THE French Cyrano, Gerard Depardieu's big-budget 1990 French version is more handsomely mounted than Jose Ferrer's actor-iconic version, but Steve Martin pretty well nailed the story.

In their first meeting, Ai cracks up over misreading Moteuchi as "Motenai" (dateless), but by the end of the episode realizes he's a nice guy who got a bad break from his real girl, and that staying with him might not be so bad after all. ("And so Beauty was trapped in the Beast's apartment...")
The two are so obviously sacrificing themselves when they're perfect for each other, it's one of the more poignant OAV comedies to watch, and deserved to get a whole season...And certainly didn't deserve that WTF? "art" ending the OVA got.

No Gunbuster? Did it get picked up again?? I haven’t been paying attention.

The movie version was licensed on Blu-ray. And I guess if you've got money burning a hole in your pocket you can still buy the Japanese Blu-ray of the OVA series that doesn't even have English subtitles.

I got the OVA on Blu-ray but I would buy it again if licensed. I like Gunbuster a little too much...I think I own both DVD and Blu-ray versions of OVA and movie.

Exactly! Video Girl Ai had quite the penchant for using levity to generate a sense of serious endearment. Everything was in its favour until impromptu antagonists and tribulations took to the stage.

This brings back good memories to me. I remember watching Sol Bianca when I was 7 or 8 years old. Plastic Little is not very good in my opinion. I like it when I was a young teenager, but I find it to be pretty bad now.

Other out of print titles that I feel like that should be mention on the list:

Abashiri Family
Ambassador Magma
Angel Cop
Baoh
Blue Sonnet
Cockpit
Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes
Genesis Survivor Gaiarth
Gunbuster
Madox-01
Ogre Slayer
Psycho Diver
Spirit of Wonder
Tale of Genji
Wild 7

I was also a video store junkie as a kid growing up. So I remember a lot of the old anime titles on VHS as a kid.

Also the Rumic World OVAs, Laughing Target, Mermaid Forest, Mermaid's Scar, Fire Tripper, Maris the Shojo, One Pound Gospel. I hardly doubt any of them are still in print, especially considering none of them got disc releases, in Japan or elsewhere(Well, they did get laserdisc versions in Japan...).

And they are unlikely to get released anew anytime soon either as the creator, Rumiko Takahashi, has more or less disowned them...

Maybe I didn't search hard enough but Birdy The Mighty gets no love? That just makes me sad.
