I found the show less irritating than DxD. Though I don't understand why these guys can't just make a straight ecchi series without the fantasy nonsense.

I can understand the appeal of ecchi in the sense that some people just wanna see boobs and butts and panties without the boinking and everything that usually comes with it. But the fantasy stuff is almost never well written and usually just gets in the way of that so what's the point?

I think jr240483 earlier said it best to answer this. Also, just because it’s not the most well written series you’ll find, that doesn’t mean people can’t still find it fun and entertaining to watch. If you don’t, then you might as well watch something else. Ecchi series that just so happens to contain plot can work just fine and people enjoy them.

I seriously think this show is laughably bad because the fanservice scenes are treated like they're "hardcore submission for real grownups" and then it's just some dude fondling a chick's tits for 5 minutes. And then she comes because the writer didn't know how sex works. There was a scene at some point where the dude says something like "this is going to be a lot, but I want you to sit here and bare it," then he just puts a showerhead on her boobs. It's like what I thought sex was when I was 10. I think you can have a raunchy comedy or action romp harem and have it work just fine, but there are a lot of ecchi shows that I feel you may as well just watch porn. This though took it to a completely new level. You can't have dialogue that sounds like he's about to tie her up and bang her silly, then just show a dude fondling titties for a minute. It's so tonally jarring that I was laughing more than anything.

funi should have just used the dxd cast to do testament instead.

If it's any consolation, Mio and Xenovia share the same VA, so it's not like the voice casts are entirely dissimilar.

This was probably another show that Crunchyroll already contracted to dub in LA prior to the partnership.

That's it precisely. I'm a fan of the type of work both Testament and D x D declare to be but utterly fail to follow through on. The shows don't have to show sex... there's other things for that, yes...but it is possible to walk the line and at times cross the line without actually showing the line. To put it in terms of Testament of New Sister Devil: Maria is a succubus and I know what one of those is but does the show? I only made it through the first couple of episodes where her role was strictly "enabler" for some reason rather than more of what I hoped for based on its reputation, an animated version of Oretama... Don't look it up, awesome series that it is... now that story had a succubus or two and knew how to use them.

Knew what they were used for.

My own suggestion of eroticism that isn't hentai is Kiss x Sis. There aren't that many because of hentai or rather because it's easier to be either completely clean but with nudity or be completely porn but with censors. There are plenty of manga examples though but there's no point in animating them because they'd never be able to recoup their budget. Also it takes a lot more talent than just animating jiggle physics of bare breasts to show nothing but imply anything.

The Kiss x sis TV show was way tamer than Testament. It's only the OVAs that start to breach that territory.

Maria's role as a succubus was to initiate the master/slave contract and to amplify greatly the girls' libido and their sensitivity/pleasure. I'd say that was a fair use of her succubi powers. She was also the facilitator when the girls started quarreling with each other and infused lust in them so that Basara was able to pleasure them all. Whereas in DxD when has Issei been able to have an actual harem and get intimate with more than one girl at a time? The girls all cockblock every time. There's no feeling of an actual harem as there is in Testament.

This was so boring.Got to about episode 8 before giving up. Characters just weren't great and the dub wasn't great either.

Yes, please tell us the singular anime way to use a nonexistent creature that appears in various different forms in folklore the world over.

Sarcasm aside, you not liking Maria's character or her role in the story is perfectly fine, but succubi are seen across fiction with countless different interpretations. It's completely up to each individual story "what they are used for."

the OVA'S? HA! Hardly! those kiss x sis ova's pale in comparison to the to love ru darkness ova's which DEFINITELY breached that territory. and while they arent OVA's , what really pushed those boundaries where the yosuga no sora series which included twin siblings that ARE blood related, unlike kiss x sis that included fanservice involving siblings that were NOT blood related.

maybe so, but this should have been one time they could have included the WHOLE dxd cast or at least the cast of valkyrie drive that did its dub very well which wasn't a surprise to me since most of that cast were in dxd. and this criticism which is coming from a dub person like myself is anything but easy to do, but when a dub is this bad, i have to call it out.
