Yeah, I had a look at the Gunma series after reading first-episode reviews on Crunchyroll saying it was completely useless but the first episode was good (???). It’s much better than could reasonably be expected of a tourism advert.

I liked Wotakoi but other than it being a romance show I don't see why the main couple is actually, well a couple. It just seams like they got together because they were both single and... I dunno I just find that incredibly sad. Plus I liked there banter as just friend so losing that right away seems like a bit of a waste.

I also can't really relate to the social shame of the hobby, maybe that's a japans things but I can't imagine anyone dumbing there significant other just because of there hobby. And if they do, that seems like a positive thing, I'd take being single over dating someone that stop me from doing what I want anyday.

It does happen IRL, though. One of my friends and his wife got married pretty much because they had both agreed several years earlier that they were going to see other people, but if they both wound up single at a certain point in their lives then they'd just break down and get married. They've been together for at least 7-8 years now. I've also known several other people who seem lost if they're not constantly in one relationship or another. (Can't quite understand that myself, as I've always been very independent - maybe too much so for my own good. Rolling Eyes )

It is a Japanese thing. They're probably 2-3 decades behind the States in terms of geek hobbies becoming more socially acceptable. Not helping is that Japan also is more notorious for fans taking things to creepy extremes.

Will there be a shorts roundup for this season? I appreciate that we've never really had a repeat of the stellar set of shorts for Winter 2016, but the roundup has always helped me find some cool shorts that I might have overlooked.

Very happy with Golden Kamui episode 2. Asirpa/Sugimoto faces give me life. Also looking forward to all the Shiraishi shenanigans.

Haven't seen it yet, but it certainly sounds like Sweet Tyrant is a gender-swap of the hyper-tsunderes that are popular these days (the most extreme likely being "Please Don't Bully Me, Nagatoro," as the male lead in that one gets panic attacks), possibly crossed with the way some people show affection with swipes (especially in Jewish couples, in my experience).

The response to it seems to be at least as much shock at seeing the dynamic outside the genre context that makes the behavior okay as it is a reaction to anything unique about the show.

My Sweet Tyrant seems to cater to a very special type of...fetish? It didn't so much leave me feeling uncomfortable since both parties seem to clearly enjoy the relationship as it left me to wondering who exactly is supposed to be the target audience for this...

My favourite shorts are definitely Tiramisu and the Gunma show for their absurd kind of humour and Isekai Izakaya because there can never be too much food porn (and i got tired of Shoukegi no Souma halfway through the previous season...).

I took Tyrant as an exaggerated parody of a (too) common shoujo trope. It wasn’t as bad as I’d expected, but not great either. Mildly funny and mildly creepy.

Of the things I’ve watched, Hinamatsuri, Golden Kamuy and Tiramisu all got consideramy better in their second episodes.

  • The Hinamatsuri manga gets better as it goes along so I was already expecting improvement. Really think it has the potential to be a sleeper hit.
  • Kamuy was already interesting in the first episode, but the timing and choreography of the fights combined with the CG bear let it down rather. Second episode had no such problems, and it’s character interactions and weather-related plot stuff were pretty great.
  • Was unconvinced by Tiramisu’s first episode, but the second and third were surprisingly funny.

I see that LotGH’s third episode is filling in backstory that should provide emotional backing for the battles and politics, but haven’t watched it yet so don’t know how well it’s handled.

Sweet Tyrant is some sort of shoujo parody. You know, where the main boy constantly insults the girl every chance he gets but secretly loves her. Episode 2 makes it clear that not only is he not fooling anyone with his asshole act, but she actually has a chart of his reactions. The more dere he act the more he tries to avoid her later. It's funny if you can't stand the shoujo trope.

I would watch Golden Kamuy just to hear the performance by Shiraishi Haruka as Asirpa. Her delivery commands your attention nearly every time she speaks.

Will we have reviews of the first 3 episodes of the NEtflix series that have been picked up this season, like it happened with Kakegurui and Fate Apocrypha? Given that you have reviewers in Japan...

Tiramisu is kinda ok. Gunma is amusingly ok. Izakaya is kinda boring.

I had a really weird reaction to Tyrant. It should be something really off-putting or irritating, but for some reason I find it more relaxing than most iyashikei series. She and the observer character totally have his number, so the insults are like nerf arrows shot by an archer who couldn't hit the broadside of a barn if he were standing inside it. Maybe I enjoy watching her fluster him with her cheery reactions. I dunno. Enjoy is probably too strong a word. But it's very calming to me. Confused

It was bound to happen, I usually dislike chinese cartoons but the one that had interested me has not been licensed AFAIK. I am referring to Creatures Family Days. I watched the first episode which is half-length (15+min) and it was a mixed bag. The artwork is good looking and the animation is ok for a slice of life series. But I hope the plot improves, because it got ugly pretty fast, what we get looks like the day after their parents were arrested for genetically experimenting with them, but the sad thing is that they are simply thrown back into society after living at a laboratory in an island, there is no tutor or family relative to help them and the youngest son has the role of reinserting their anti-social older brother and sisters into society. I am a sucker for monster shows and I for now I will keep watching to see where this is going.
