After seeing the pretty bad CG used in black clover's fights and even some recycling of shots I was worried what was going to happen to this series. Fortunately they seem to have put a good amount of effort in as overall I don't have any serious complaints about the animation.

I'm doubly happy to see this series as the manga later on sometimes gets REALLY confusing as to what the heck is actually happening, I know in certain chapters there would usually be someone in the comments explaining exactly what happened because it was so hard to tell. Hopefully they'll be easier to figure out after watching them here.

Sadly this seems to only be a 12 ep season (if the charts are accurate at least) so we won't be getting too far in the story.

The auction was a chaotic battleground with a hundred and one things happening at the same time in the manga as well, but you don't really have the same freedoms to do that with animation without everything feeling incredibly overstuffed unfortunately. I don't quite think it's the fault of the director, it's just how it happened in the manga, but I agree it could've been done with a little more finesse, everything feels haphazard here. I believe next episode won't be *quite* as all over the place. The lackluster animation didn't really help things, but that's been par for the course for this anime.

This is also about the point in the story where those that *didn't* read the manga will likely be extremely confused.

For example, Takizawa being a ghoul. *How* is he a ghoul? *Why* is he a ghoul? This wasn't explained in the :re manga either, because the conclusion of the Part 1 manga and the direction it went in made the how and why obvious, so it was never something that needed to be explicitly addressed. With those that have only watched the anime though, things are different. I can only hope the anime will take a minute or two to explain because if it doesn't, it'll only further cement the :re anime as only being aimed at manga fans and manga fans only.

But I can't wait to see more of him in the anime, because he's easily a fan-favorite, and for good reason.

And Kanae is gonna be playing a pretty large role later on in the season, so if anyone doesn't end up liking him, boy do I got some bad news for them.

This episode is another victim of studio pierrot, not to the ambitions of TG as a series.

As an anime only viewer of Tokyo Ghoul I'm really struggling to watch this and about to drop it. Sure season 2 was a mess but at least I thought it was slightly entertaining, this new season is just annoying & perplexing to watch.

that's because it is starting to feel that this season is trying to be like root a. and that is having little to no relation to the storyline of the source materials.

Despite his best efforts, however misguided they were, Kaneki lost almost all of his friends at Anteiku, lost his best friend, and almost lost his soul after joining Aogiri Tree.

which is a problem in itself. most people assumed that this series will do like blue exorcist impure king arc and alter the ending to make it more faithful to the manga since in the root a anime, spoiler[ hide died], but in the mangaspoiler[ he is very much alive!]

the fact that they haven't even done that have the most die hard TG manga fans calling this series a filler season just like with root a!

The difference really is staggering when you switch out an A-Team for a franchise with the B-Team.

Wait, spoiler[Hide lived in the manga?] I thought it was implied that Kaneki ate him!

I loved shu as comic relief but to be honest Kanae seems like a poor man's ripoff.
That said the next arc is definitely one of the better ones but I feel like its effectiveness on anime only fans will vary greatly since spoiler[Tsukiyama] is at the forefront of the arc and since they cut the majority of his character development it likely won't make any sense.

Also if we only have 12 episodes in the series then that sucks because the spoiler[Third Cochlea Raid/Rushima Landing Operation] arc would be the best place to end the season or even series, with spoiler[Kaneki finally looking to the future and making his first real steps toward turning his 'tragic' narrative into an 'epic'.]
What a wasted opportunity, here's to hoping they don't make another anime original ending or change things around.

Chie is a very interesting character because she's someone who's kind of difficult to get a good read on. Unfortunately, if you're looking to understand more about her, you're not going to get a whole lot, because she's not exactly a new character to this franchise.

She made her official debut in a side novel, and has had a number of chapters to herself in those, and that's where the majority of her characterization is established.

That being said, her actual introduction was adapted into an OVA by the name of Tokyo Ghoul: Pinto. I'd recommend it, but it, along with Tokyo Ghoul: Jack, was never licensed for some reason, so there aren't any means of watching it legally afaik. Might need to torrent it unfortunately.

Tsukiyama has shown plenty of kindness to Kaneki during the course of the manga, all of those moments though were unfortunately cut off of the anime's second season. Anime only watchers sadly will never know that his primary characteristic is a classy gentleman and not a comic relief pervert. Thank God this season took away his monstrous chin at the very least.

Oh, and Furuta is the best thing to happen to Tokyo Ghoul ever. He's evil, he's interesting and downright funny and his reactions are amazing and hilarious. Currently he's the only one who holds a speck of interest into a series that has grown constantly repetitive in its plot and themes (don't attack me, this has not become obvious yet in the anime).

Torso also gets away yet again. I'm not really sure why Torso of all characters has been around since episode one of :re, and at this point his presence is too bizarre to be threatening. Saiko continues to be left out of the fray, and now nine episodes in, I wish we knew more about her character other than “she's a NEET.”

Torso's existence leads to reveals about Mutsuki, one of which was toned down in the anime and the other of which would happen in a hypothetical Season 4.

Saiko becomes more active sometime later, I don't really remember when but it should be in an arc or two.

on the contrary. read the manga. he is very much alive. its one of the reasons why manga fans of TG have a disdain for root a. cause that season pretty much pulling a blue exorcist and went non canon. and from the looks of things, it seems that RE is also doing the same thing and NOT being faithful to the manga! everyone was expecting this series to be similar to the impure king arc, but alias its not to be! too bad!

Will some minor background character show up out of the blue as a major antagonist again? Possibly!

I can't believe how much this show has made me care about Shu and his family. He almost seems like a completely different character than the guy we met in the first two seasons,
Turns out that following the manga rather well instead of half-assing anime-original developments and butchering manga material will do that for a character, who knew?

Also there's finally confirmation that :re's completely ignoring Root A, as shown by Tsukiyama's flashback to his time spent with Kaneki's independent group - a development that didn't exist in Root A.
