I wonder how many suffer from ASD which can serious affect one's ability to get work or stay in a job. It can also limit the type of work one can do.

Automation has also reduced the number of available jobs. Factory jobs just aren't there anymore and most clerical jobs have been replaced by computer programs. So there's fewer jobs with more people competing to get those jobs.

Urbanization also has an impact, although maybe more here than in Japan. On a farm everyone worked. In the city only selected individuals get work.
