The irony is that the Mongols themselves were famous for being able to defeat numerically superior foes.

I was half-expecting to see a "guest-written by Yoshiyuki Tomino" credit at the end. It's hard to have a somewhat uplifting ending after so much death and defeat, but the fact that "Upside Down" by SHE'S is a great ending theme sure helps.

Another thing that helps elevate the ending is knowing Japanese history.

This was very much a "we may have lost the battle, but not the war" ending, putting a nice little capstone on the recurring comparison I've seen a lot of people make between this series and 300. Both feature a numerically outnumbered force defending a small chunk of land against the full might of their era's greatest invading foreign horde. They eventually get overran, and lose, but ultimately the invading force is repelled in larger, more epic combat.

Also, the way this season ended opens things up for a second season set during the second Mongol invasion of Japan, which, yes please. I would like to see that very much. Twisted Evil
