I'd love to hear the production story with this series, because I have a feeling it wasn't meant to be as bad of quality as it ended up with, especially given Episode 1 was more or less "okay".

Gundoh Musashi's first episode looked "okay", right up until the climax, where Yasha tries to crush Musashi with a falling tree... Except that said tree is never even drawn on screen, let alone given a falling animation!

If you want the low-down on what went down with Gundoh Musashi, though, then you're in luck. This past April, I put up a translation of the infamous interview that the producer & director of that did just days after it finished airing in Japan. Have fun with the information!

If only we got more of this kind of info on infamously poorly-done anime.

Flashback (Mekaku City Actors)

Yet another reason why I usually wait to binge watch the BDs than watch the streaming/broadcast version for most shows. And yeah that sequence was so horrifically WTF bad
https://imgur.com/a/BR6zH

however, the rest of the show also had the usual alterations from TV to BD for anime

Unfortunately subscribers on Crunchyroll--and Netflix, Amazon, Hulu in general--will never get to see the proper version and will be stuck with that WTF ep 9 version

Don't forget Twintail ni Narimasu. They did manage to fix it up in the volume releases at least.

The same fixes / changes / new cuts for BD happened with Attack on Titan Season 1
Well, pretty much all of anime gets changes, though not usually not quite as severe, but stuff like this always happens. And unfortunately given the TV/streaming preferences, most viewers will never see the finished product.

Why isn't Evangelion on this list? The last episode is legendary.

probably cause not many people watched the broadcast. They fixed all that stuff in the home release.

But Crunchyroll STILL has the broadcast version up... and that one scene wasn't the only thing wrong with that episode.

Usually animation doesn't make an anime, but sometimes you can judge a book by its cover. For me, Sailor Moon Crystal's first season was similar to what ChibiGoku said about Musashi Gundow; it peaked in episode 1; it looked fine, though not as good as the original anime and nothing amazing, but then that was it and they gave up afterward...the music video looked mediocre and it all went downhill from there, episodes like episodes 2, 3, 9, 10-17, 21, 24, parts of 25 and the entirety of 26 were so horrible it's impossible to believe Toei Animation worked on it.

In episode 25 we actually had some damn good looking shots like this (aside from the ugly puke green colored sky): https://scontent.fzty1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/10983721_906003382793406_5713242143396576545_n.png?_nc_cat=0&oh=89fa8ba571045bf4aeeeb8901ef7b7b6&oe=5BFC82ED

But then went back to crap like this (and no, the Blu-Ray version doesn't even look better, in some cases, they actually gave Usagi long hair like Minako in addition to her pigtails!!):
https://scontent.fzty1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/11202086_906004066126671_7969767436795907649_n.png?_nc_cat=0&oh=442162f673d40818c7f79678934898e8&oe=5C07ADCD

I've seen that car chase also, and holy hell, is it so laughably bad, especially the pool shark that turns into a dolphin!! Laughing

But how is that anime, crappy animation aside, is it good, or bad?

Was a bit surprised to not see Eva's last two TV episodes on here...but maybe the article doesn't mean that type of meltdown....I really thought they ran out of budget though?

that as well as the second half of darling in the franxx and the ending of chaos dragon and divine gate.

while hand shakers had its fault its by nowhere had an animation meltdown compared to the finale of SM Crystal, the last two eps of eva and franxx!

also , ZERO PEOPLE IN THE FORUM was surprised that alucard got the top spot. i mean there was no way any other monster form could EVER top his! Laughing Laughing Laughing

as for the current poll. that is way too obvious. its more than likely that the top 5 will consist of hot tempered tsunderes , with one spot being filled by mikasa!

At least with Eva's last two episodes, they went straight to an....alternative style of storytelling (which works in the show's context, given what's happening). It was different but it wasn't a "meltdown" like those in the list.

Those of us who got our anime from the 00's fansub days will have to put in a write-in vote.
Seeing as we never got "Daa!Daa!Daa!" in an official NA sub (aka "UFO Baby" on overseas Animax), so we may have to disqualify Christine Hanakomachi--
The Preciously Cute But Jealously Hair-Trigger Bipolar Billionaire-Girl trope, who has a tendency to subjectively, erm, misinterpret the situations our hero and heroine run into, especially when taking care of a lost baby:

But, since we didn't over here, Momoka from Sgt. Frog will have to be the nearest equivalent substitute.

I like the new poll, it really made me think about several different characters. Of all the ones I was familiar with it came down Roberta and Shiki, but I chose Roberta because she has an entire OVA series dedicated to what happens when she’s angry.

Totally agree. Eva's last two episodes never really bothered me. In fact, I quite enjoyed them. I guess it was because I saw it during the start of my anime fandom.

Eva's two last episodes are my favorite of the series and I watched them knowing full well the story behind them, but technically speaking they would count for a list like this, yes.

For Mekakucity Actors, actually the one in the original version was what make that episode special & make sense. I mean, this is a flashback, taken from memories of a young girl. You can't really demand a memories to be in "high quality".

Oh and I see some people in this thread confused between animation & artwork.

Was Musashi Gundoh not considered because it wasn't a case of a meltdown in a specific episode but all episodes were so poor sthat they couldn't even animate a merely competent opening?

Handshakers was put on the list apparently do to everything sucking so that wasn't the reason.

It seemed like Shaft being edgy as usual, albeit ill-received, which is why it was changed in the DVD release.
