Grateful for all the things he did in the earliest years of fandom to make stuff accessible to the English-speaking world.

Would not be the fan I am today without reading Watching Anime, Reading Manga at a young age. Patten was a legend, and one of the major reasons anime fandom in North America exists today.

I too have a copy of "Watching Anime, Reading Manga" in my library. However, I became fully aware of his industry contributions only after the fact, even though I was a part of anime fandom at the time. Sad day indeed. |

I remember reading some of his comments on various blog posts on Cartoon Research. Really interesting guy. He will be missed.

RIP. It's amazing that he had such a long career in anime and stayed a fan forever. Just imagine how many radical shifts and trends he's seen over his life but he stayed in love without throughout each of them.
It must have been a crazy feeling to have been a fan when anime in America literally didn't exist to seeing it now where there's hundreds of conventions a year, football players doing anime touchdown celebrations, pop starts talking about anime, it's parodied in SNL sketches, etc. |

I met Fred several times before his stroke and exchanged emails with him several times afterwards. I also had the honor of contributing a couple stories to furry anthologies he edited. Such a sad loss. May he Rest In Peace.

I was very sad to hear his passing. I've been reading his articles on Cartoon Research, his articles has given me better insight on anime and the industry in Japan. RIP Fred Patten, you helped the anime fandom in the US since it's infancy, look how anime fandom in the US has grown. May your legacy live on.

Sadly, every year is like this. I think the death of Stan Lee is going to be the most-notable 2018 death concerning people that worked in the anime, manga, and comics-related industries. |
