Best figure I can find with two minutes of searching suggests that about 22% of Tumblr usage is for porn. That's theoretically a survivable loss. On the other hand, I wouldn't be happy if 22% of my body weight was removed from my torso.

Egypt and most of the Middle East would like a word.

I've been enjoying the mass panic comments I've been reading on some of my more favorite Reddit accounts. Y'all would think someone would have cleaned up the internet and banned all porn by the way some people are reacting.

You just got to love when a company as big and as stupid as tumblr digs their own grave. Laughing

Eh. On the one hand, I'm all for adult content, freedom is important especially when it's about artistic expression, blah blah blah.

On the other hand, in the past year or so a ridiculous amount of my Tumblr space has been taken over by porn spam bots. I had to unfollow some tags - perfectly innocuous tags even, ones that never had any NSFW content - because the porn spam has become unbearable and it drowned out most other content. I even had a bunch of these spam bots follow me or send me messages. Again, these were spam bots, not fanart or artistic nudes or whatever, but it was a pretty bad user experience, and while I reported them I've no illusions as to how effective that was. And while I didn't come across any child porn, thank god, I know people who have.

So sure, this new policy is probably going to lead to Tumblr's demise, but I wonder how a platform that allows NSFW content can exist while also not getting overrun by porn spam. Apparently bots can game the algorithms better and faster than the platform can keep up with, and I don't expect human moderation to be effective on a platform of this size.

Pixiv, where anything goes.

Really the stupidest thing about this mess that has me iffy about it is that Tumblr’s algorithm cannot, for the life of it, properly distinguish between SFW and NSFW. I upload art of shirtless anime men with glossy nipples and that’s fine. But I upload a comic of two people kissing and that gets flagged the instance it’s uploaded.

Overall it seems like they’re not actually terminating blogs like they did a few weeks ago (which is a dick move because the staff didn’t even warn them.) Instead they’re going to put a privacy filter on flagged blogs and make them inaccessible to those 18 and under. Or just not have you bee searchable at all. For example, if you post something that is flagged than no one but you can see it. That’s what they’re claiming anyway. Also, smut and other forms of written content are okay.

I wouldn’t say this is the end of Tumblr. Just the end of it being the porn haven it was memed as. Probably wishful thinking but while people are freaking out there are more people mocking and making fun of this disastrous purge. It’s the content creators who are the most cautious cause they may lose traffic if they put up flagged work that no one can see. It’s definitely screwed over my NSFW art friends who built their internet jobs on making this kind of content. Otherwise, one half is acting like it’s the end of the Tumblr, the other is just going about like usual.

As for me, the only thing I did in response was delete all of my NSFW and move it to Twitter. Otherwise I’m riding this Tumblr train until it crash and burns ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Tumblr is owned by Verizon through their purchase of Yahoo and they probably barely knew it existed till Apple booted if for excessive amounts of child porn something Verizon did not want to see their name associated with on the evening news.

If Tumblr dies Verizon does not care it's an irrelevant money sink that replaces earnings with 'engagement'.

Well, its kinda disappointment to see Tumblr banning 18+ stuff there to make more better places for people for those who are still underage.

Tumblr is becoming an "New Deviantart", one of the aritst, E-vay left Deviantart and moved to Tumblr because she got fed up over the art theft that has been happening on her DA over the course of the years.

Tumblr is like an Deviantart because they are banning porn stuff like this, i hope Tumblr decline in popularity, but Tumblr is the popular place to share things like art, asks, gif and more.

(sorry for my poor English)

- tumblr is used by a wide range of people, for very different purposes. I'd say most of the user-bases of those distinct groups interact very little with each other. Compare that to how people use twitter, or facebook, I guess, where you have your meme people, your anti-vaxxers, your political groups etc.
- one of those purposes on tumble is posting porn
- apple delists tumblr in their app store for containing child porn
- as a move to fix this, tumblr now bans porn altogether (probably easier that way, but also a huge overreaction against the majority of legal content), so it doesn't just die as a result
...
- people on the internet rejoice

This is interesting.

Well its not like anyone didn`t forsee this. Those of us, who has been around since before Yahoo! bought Tumblr all foresaw this. I mean https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Yahoo!-owned_sites_and_services#Closed/defunct_services Yahoo is very good at discontinuing

Yahoo has also been known to throw gasoline and light a match when they run into trouble rather than try to actually do anything. For example, when a news outlet did a story on Yahoo chat rooms having predators in them, they responded by completely removing the ability to create chat rooms.

Someone posted this Robot Chicken skit in response, and it seems accurate -

https://youtu.be/_vf857Px3A8

The song goes “the internet is for porn” but the fact of the matter is, as often as they are mocked and ridiculed, there are a lot of artists that serve the LBGTQ+ community that are now without a platform as they are viewed as being obscene. And that’s their prerogative as a website but it also completely guts a massive portion of their traffic.

Who else remembers about 7-8 years ago when Digg self destructed and everyone migrated to Reddit? I suspect that Tumblr is about to make the same mistake. Don't mess with your userbase folks.
