With that many blue-rays sold in just one week for Overlord, chance to get 4th season is now close to 100% despite all LN readers cough haters cough wished for no continuation anymore because they disliked certain episode.

Now we are haters for criticizing a shitty adaptation of great books ever since the very first season?
Please.

Welcome to the internet, where you can dismiss even the most valid of criticisms by labeling them with whatever nasty term you choose and then retreat right back into your bubble! It's just that easy!

The first season is a decent, typical, LN adaptation. The second and third seasons on the other hand..... have issues, the third in particular.

But be honest, the LN(and WN) have issues as well.

DVD/Blu-ray and other merchandise sales keep the LN alive...So it is a very good thing that the poorly adapted third season is selling well, then perhaps Overlord will continue past volume 20-The author is considering volume 20 as his stopping point, that would mean a truncated season 7 for the anime-

And sorry the anime fell below even typical LN adaptations standards after the first season. Pacing was horrible, the creation of plot holes and the animation quality, just to mention a few issues. Heck they apologized to fans for the 2nd season's pacing issues and yet the 3rd season's pacing.....
Sigh why wasn't v8 an OVA or 2 episodes. No two short stories(and they're short mind) take up 5 episodes of a 13 episode season.... Could blame the strict adherence to the three book per season format, but I look at the director/writers not actually creating an adaption but more of an synopsis...an infomercial.

Never thought I’d see the day when a BL show would so handily outsell stuff like Overlord, a SAO spin-off, and a Fate spin-off.

Why do they keep churning out so much stuff for dudes again? Women are the better market at this point.

Is more the other way around. Is the LN that keep the anime alive. As long the LN publisher thinks that making more anime will keep the numbers of LN sold up, there will be more anime. When the publisher think that making more anime will not bring more LN's sales, they will stop financing the anime.

How many LN volumes going to be made is independent of anime sales and depend only on LN sales numbers.

Well, big names like SAO and DxD can be more independent of LN sales and keep having more seasons on DVD/BDs and licenses alone so maybe Overlord can be one of those few exceptions, and looking at the numbers i hope that Overlord anime can keep up for more seasons,

Unless im reading the numbers wrong, DAKAICHI is behind the sales of Overlord III, Persona 5 and Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, unless you are talking of DVD sales. BL and woman target shows are usually better on DVD rankings than on BD rankings, with a few exceptions like Free and Yuri on Ice.

DAKAICHI sold a total of 6118 units. Though looking again, Overlord also did brisk business on DVD, so it’s still ahead. Mea culpa!

People who track/talk about disc sales use units sold because dividing them into DVD and BluRay is dumb as they have similar profits and putting them together gives a better idea of actual fanbase/popularity. (This is not only standard in the west but in Japan/China as well) Anyone in the community would consider Dakaichi to have higher disc sales than Persona and SAO.

DVD sales have less importance for the usual late night shows. If you compare the rankings, DVD sales have more mainstream shonen and kids shows that don't even appear on BD rankings.
So adding sales of the 2 lists are not a very good comparison because the target costumer base is different.

But i'm not trying to downplay the sucess of DAKAICH. 3,971 are a very good number in today's BD market. Making more BL anime for woman is a good bet, but not enough to overtake the young adult male market.

This response is out of touch with industry standard. Just because less people are buying DVDs does not mean they aren't important or that you should only use BD sales. Musouka was absolutely correct to use "units sold" as thats the standard and combining DVD and BD sales is always how disc sales have been compared and recorded. You can't just change how things are measured just because it makes "shows aimed at young men" look better. Money is money and profit is profit. Tons of late night shows make money off of DVDs sales and discounting them because other types of shows also have DVD sales doesn't make sense. (If you've ever heard numbers associated with "anime Bluray sales" on the internet, those numbers almost certainly have included DVD sales because thats how we've always measured it)

Some historical context, most disc sales for every genre used to be DVDs until Blu Rays started taking more and more of the market for male otaku. Shows aimed at women and children are also transitioning just like shows aimed at men did. And we combine the two just as we did in the beginning and just as we did turning that transition. It makes no sense to just drop DVDs because shows aimed at men have fully made the transition and other types of shows haven't completely converted yet. Publishers make similar money off of all disc sales and excluding some just because male otaku don't use them anymore is nonsensical which is why no one does it.

There are also a difference in price. For example
Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online volume 6 [Limited Release] on CDJapan
BD: 6800yen/US$ 60.01 DVD:5800yen/US$ 51.18

Maybe 1000 yen per volume don't look much but is still a difference.

4053x6800=27 560 400 so you would need 4752 DVD's to make the same profit (if i get my Math correct lol). About 700 DVDs more per volume. And so on. You can go and try make the same math to find what show give more profit, but still...

Trying to look at popularity rankings using DVD/BDs rankings is pretty difficult exactly because they are aimed at different type of clients. female and kids oriented shows usually sold more on DVD. Young adult male oriented shows usually sold more on BDs.

We can go back-and-forth with arguments, but what is important is that anime keep been sold in good numbers, been DVD or BD's

DVDs are also cheaper to produce than BluRays. Profit does not mean cost of the product, it means cost - production cost. The point is the "aimed at different type of clients" thing you are describing is a temporary and transitory thing. Male otakus used to exclusively buy DVDs and we used the same system we used then, and we're not going to change it just because men are now buying moslty BDs. Even excluding that, why on Earth do you think "well male otaku mostly buy BDs so they should exclusively be used as a measurement of success" makes any sort of sense? A BL sold better than SAO. Thats okay- it didn't have the main protagonists and was bound to do worse than the main series. Theres no need to make up new rules about how people judge disc sales because of it. It wasn't even by that much.

Probably the most interesting thing is the trend we’re seeing in female-oriented propertiesin regards to that BD/DVD split. This season of Free has a 67/32% split in favor of BDs, Banana Fish has 70/30%, and even DAKAICHI is 65/35%.

I’m also interested in seeing how Tsurune ends up doing. It’s not settling the fanbase on fire, but I’m enjoying it a lot.
