Pre-air episode is out.

It's a pretty neat start considering the way they introduced the world fiction content and some character building already. We meet Naofumi whose life changes drastically after being summoned as a hero. Might have to get used to his voice but it definitely suits him as a protagonist. The part about the shield plays a major part to his character gimmick. Some of the other heroes gets some cameos but we'll find out more about them soon.

So he gets asked to save the world so no doubt this story will also focus a lot on that. Really has a lot of potential tbh.

Animation quality also looks solid on most parts so I hope they can keep that level of consistency.

Felt kind of obvious that the woman was up to no good, that it actually feels frustrating that he did not see it coming. If the main character, with otaku traits, thinks of themselves as lucky for the unearned attention, and plainly accepts praise as being amazing, I am thinking that it is being a frustrating Mary Sue who feels like an ass, or a weak person who is an ass. I guess that it says something that he has fallen to excessive intimidation and the buying of a slave by the end.

Could mean it might actually be good if he grows into a better person, in say that rest of the characters so far are pretty awful too. A bit worried that it is falling into revenge fantasy, from clearly making it so easy to hate others. Hopefully with this first thing being double length, the mood might shift.

Extra long first episode. Considering how often the translated volumes of this franchise get a review airing on this website, there must be something in it that sets it apart from its genre competitors. Taking the prejudice that those who rely on the shield don't get any glory compared to those in the frontlines, this franchise amplifies it and gives the Shield Hero the worst possible starting hand he could possibly get after being transported.

To be fair to him, the Shield Hero picks himself up quickly after his public humiliation and gets going. His trick with the balloons against devious merchants is an especially clever touch as he leverages the few advantages he has as the much maligned Shield bearer. With the introduction of the slave dealer, Iwatani can also use his maligned reputation to his benefit with an absolutely loyal slave who will no longer betray him in his travels. After his previous experience with humans, I wouldn't blame him for being reliant on slaves even if the rest of the new world denigrates him for it.

The coughing slave at the very end wouldn't have something to do with the strange dream Iwatani had right at the start, would it?

being a fan of both the web and light novel it is good to see them stick to the story very solid, the art and music are great, i only fret the pacing, they either should make all episodes 45 minutes which if thats the case i don't know how well it will do or speed up the pace of the events, hopefully to those who have not checked out the light novel or manga (as the web novel differs later) would miss out on quite a bit (dispite was certain "reviewers" think)

Episode 2

He was not entirely heroic in how he acquired and forced his will on a slave child, but I think that was kind of alright. Certainly feels like she was on the heroes journey by the end of the episode. What I was hoping for that he had sunken to being a bit scummy from a bad experience, but rehabilitate.

Iwatani and Raphtalia have worked hard since the hellhound; they've gone from level 4 to level 18 (Raphtalia) and level 16. Skills and equipment have significantly improved as well.

It's interesting that Raphtalia received accelerated maturation after killing lots of monsters. Raises an interesting question about adventurer demi-humans possibly having shorter lifespans because of their level-ups (assuming they don't die in the field before their time is up).

Iwatani was constantly worrying about scraping enough experience and loot to survive the first wave; turns out he and Raphtalia have done it much easier than probably he anticipated. There was risk involved throughout the village rescue, but it wasn't as desperate as it would have been had he not taken up the offer to buy Raphtalia (which would made him almost certainly the first fatality of the four heroes).

While the hated Shield Hero is busy doing the conventional heroic deed of saving a village full of innocent civilians, it turns out the other three and their party members have spent the whole time hunting down ONE manticore and are going to get richly rewarded for it. Something is wrong with that scenario; thankfully Iwatani has sown the seeds of a redeemed reputation with his actions (even a small detachment of the guardsmen decided to fight at his side). He doesn't seem too bothered about the villagers' gratitude though.

Edit: Come to think of it, the four heroes only assemble and fight together when the waves hit. Iwatani was supposed to fight with the other three, but he changed his mind after Raphtalia pointed out the threatened village. Technically it would mean Iwatani abandoned his main duty to do the more heroic thing of helping the villagers out, so I suppose the reward for the other three is thus justified if they kept to their end of the summoning bargain.

Now that one wave is over and the next one is a while away (if that massive hourglass being turned is any indication), what's going to happen next?

Based on how Raphtalia interrupted the blacksmith, I was kind of assuming that some rapid aging for maturation might be something that demi-humans are looked down on as like animals. Iwatani seems to have sure not noticed the changes from it being some level gradual.

For how cold he acted to the villagers despite saving them, I think comes down to that he can see how quickly people can change, that they might respect him up until someone higher up makes him look worse. After all he did not even help in defeating the boss. The leader of those soldiers seemed pretty out to destroy everything in their way regardless of damage, and would be quite able to change the narrative to whatever he wanted. Doing it for the general good will of protecting others, does seem to have turned some heads though.

I have played quite a lot of RPGs in my time, and I do think that there can be something said for when you become the mightiest heroes, and all you care about are rewards as the greatest, maybe forgetting value of common rabble. I can be pretty excessive in my sympathy for game NPCs, but even I tone out the calls of soldiers calling for help in a game of Hyrule Warriors because I looked at the map and deemed it not a risk to the mission.

It's pretty rare seeing an Isekai with an anti-hero, the great majority of MCs are overpowered but this guy was actually under-powered, that allied with his descent to hatred after his back stabbing makes me assume this show will be about overcoming trauma and growing to trust people again.

I started reading the LN, I'm 30 chapters in, it's nice too. I'm more fond of SH than Slime for instance right now

Its me again! I like it, but not drooling over that Thing. "That could also happen in Isekai." Some Friend and me where playing an P&P shorty with an familiar Story in RL, ha!. He (Shield Guy) is an A**? The other Alternative is starving, just saying. But even i thougt : "He, Boy, you would not have much fun with tricky Mune." Wonder why Spear Guy and this Rake hate him.? Oh, Raphtalia is adorable, but that Transform was going to fast for me Sad

From the absolute bottom that was the middle of episode #4, Naofumi has come up quite well over the last two weeks. He's had to jump through a lot of hoops in this episode to achieve his original aim of giving the changeling an indestructible set of clothes, but it's worth it in the end despite how close he came to bankruptcy early on when it comes to feeding and housing the new companion.

The much-maligned Shield Hero probably still has the smallest party of the four Cardinals, but quantity is replaced by sheer quality. The Nue fight shows just how potent his party is compared to last week. Naofumi didn't cast any spells this week (can he?) but both of his companions certainly can and they're using their new powers to full effect as well.

The new merchants and shopkeepers this week are another sign Naofumi is earning a reputation which isn't forced upon him by the schemes of the court. His new nickname features in next week's episode title, while the loot he's earning from trade (or extortion from bandits) makes up for his increased living costs and the need to prepare for the next disaster wave. The network he acquired as a reward from the artificer and the skills to create jewels of his own will surely stand him in good stead compared to the other Heroes who only know how to fight.

How much time do the three have left before the next Disaster Wave strikes and Naofumi is forced to fight alongside the other three Heroes once again?

This episode really appealed to me, because I am a total fantasy economics nerd. Yes, I have written up D&D characters up around the ideas of being traders, gone out of my way to understand it in settings, and is the main topic of writing I am working on. It has been a little gripe of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, where despite being all about society building, it is so skimpy on trading and economics of things. Had entire Skyrim playthoughs around the idea of being a trader.

Fantasy always has those big scale defeat the dragon or something, but the fantasy is always so interesting around the actual civilizations, and the trade that makes them tick.

To be honest, the first half of the episode could have stood alone as a full episode had the animators chose to do so. The consequences of taking the seed which was locked in last week's chest have been laid bare this week. Besides adding potent herbicide and plant cultivation abilities to Naofumi's ever-growing arsenal of skills, it's another example of Filo and Raphtalia working together as a team to take down their adversaries (although for most of this episode they're not really cooperating fully).

The second half of the episode has fanservice with the old hot spring episode trope. It's no secret by now Raphtalia is head over heels in thrall of her master, but she's getting unexpected competition from the newest party member. Fortunately the episode resolves the issue by getting the bickering duo to reconcile by pitting them on a quest to impress their master (which has a outcome that is both amusing and satisfying). Hopefully Naofumi uses the gift they both chose to good effect over the next few episodes.

Heading East and with that shot of a familiar looking carcass from the episode before, it appears the next episode title of 呪いの盾 might shed a little light on that interesting unlocked ability Naofumi earned during his breakdown back in episode 4.

Naofumi has to clean up after one of his peers again. Slaying the dragon is great as the Sword Hero, but leaving it to fester for a month and allowing it to morph into a Zombie Dragon really isn't on. The gimmick behind the interesting animation at the end of the OP is the big focus in this episode, as game-wise the three of them had no business taking on the Zombie Dragon head on.

On a side note, Naofumi has indeed learnt enough magic to use it in battle. As previously announced, he specialises in healing and support magic. Both categories get a brief airing in this episode.

From a Dungeons and Dragons standpoint (3rd edition), closest thing the curse shield reminds me of is of the curse song ability to the bard class. It's not a good fit though, the shield seems to feed on the hatred of the user and there's a heavy price to pay for both the wielder and allies around him. Raphtalia's burn marks are supposedly only removable with highest-grade holy water, so Naofumi is right to be wary about losing control over what is his first and only offensive capability in the series to date.

Naofumi snaps out in his trance this episode the same way he does in the OP, so it's likely his companions play some part in keeping him on the right side of the precipice. He certainly treasures them as well, if that opening scene with the covert crafting is any indication.

What kind of episode title is メルティ? Melty?!

The start of the episode seems innocent enough, Naofumi and company hang around a little longer in the plague village and meet a young noble by chance. She's a big fan of Filolials, so takes an instant shine to the transforming big bird in Naofumi's party. They have fun together on a pleasant journey back to the capital, where Naofumi has to buy high-grade holy water to treat Raphtalia.

It's when the scene shifts to the cathedral that events start moving again. If the cathedral with its odd architectural design only commemorates 3 out of the 4 cardinal heroes, is it any surprise the rest of the kingdom follows suit? Good thing Naofumi has basic appraisal to prevent getting swindled by the nun.

It's Motoyasu again and his wandering eye seems to have worsened since he last featured. Too bad his extra protecting plating doesn't help a jot against claws powerful to shatter the skull of a Nue.

So the "Melty" in the episode title refers to the young noble's name, and is an abbreviation of her true title. However, Naofumi has had enough of the capital's "hospitality" and won't give Melty the time of day with her proposal. If next week's episode title (混迷の中で) is any indication, it looks like the capital is going to be a beehive for as long as the Shield Hero spends his time there.
