I'm going to leave the last word on this conflicted subject to the BBC, which in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo massacre posted on its website an article about how freedom of expression was so vital no matter who disagreed with the subject matter, and then featured it next to one asking why Japan still allowed pornographic manga depicting children.

Not sure if it was right after but they took it down after some comments from Japan attacking her.

I'm seriously wondering how many of the naysayers have actually read the manga or if they're just going by whatever they've heard and seen from a rando Google image search.

I've read the entire manga. The "sexualization" was largely because the main character was the victim of abuse. spoiler[Her adopted father fantasizes about having his way with Rin (the little girl) when she turns 16 (age of consent at the time) because he was infatuated with her mother, and Rin is a spitting image of her. He works overtime to ensure that Rin has the cutest clothes and he does enjoy cuddling her to sleep.]

While the psychological ramifications of abuse vary from person from person, it is not uncommon to see children who are in sexually abusive situations behave in an ultra-sexualized manner just as Rin does. Rin is also the one consistently initiating this behavior; The adult teacher never acts inappropriately. On the contrary, he's pretty much the only adult who is trying to protect Rin from this abuse because spoiler[Rin's mom is dead and her father and his family want nothing to do with Rin as she is an illegitimate child.]

Yeah, I get that this originally ran in a magazine geared towards people who have this fetish, hence...that ending. I'm not saying that there aren't aspects of this manga that I don't like, but then again, I feel that way with a lot of manga series. However, I don't like that some people just label this series as simply being porn featuring drawn children. There's a lot more to this particular title than that.

I’m quite surprised they were able to reopen their shop so quickly.

Laughing You're citing a random guy's YouTube video like it's some kind of official law. Rather than quoting random YouTuber videos like you just made a epic gotcha, maybe it might be more effective to actually refute the poster's points.

The whole point of his video and making that term up was because he was tired of having logic and world building being used against his petty arguments. The term is soo obviously disingenuous and born out of bad faith.

Mangaka get their stuff published where they can. Asano Inio's Umibe no Onnanoko was published in Manga Erotics F rather than the usual Big Comic imprints as presumably they wouldn't handle it.

And my understanding of the ending is that it's a big middle finger to the Tokyo authorities after KnJ was cut short by the publisher because of the infamous Tokyo Youth Ordinance Bill, which although passed in 2010 was then starting to be enforced.

Just wanted to remind people that Project-H's issue with Shopify had nothing to do with Kodomo no Jikan since KnJ was put on eManga.com and was not under the Project-H label. DMP pulled KnJ down from emanga.com as a precaution only since they didn't want the rest of their non-hentai store affected.

The ending felt more like it was pandering to its audience with spoiler[Rin's body not maturing one bit in the 6 years that had passed].

I was more concerned for Mimi at the end. Mimi just went from one abusive relationship to another and no one seemed concerned.

I know I may be breaking a lot of rules by necro-ing this, but I was late to the party and I just need to point this out.

That's a rather big misunderstanding of Reiji's character. While he does fantasize about eventually marrying her he never does anything inappropriate to Rin, heck he doesn't even seem attracted to Rin's childish body and is visibly uncomfortable when she goes Fantasies that you keep to yourself does not constitute abuse. I think you may be mixing up manga Reiji with the butchering of his character in the anime adaptation. In the manga spoiler[ the main conflict between Reiji and Aoki is not Aoki protecting Rin from Reiji's abuse(as it is in the anime), but rather Reiji and Aoki trying to protect Rin from the abuse they think the other is inflicting on her, but eventually they realize that they both just want what is best for Rin and begrudgingly acknowledge each other] Reiji is a hardworking young man doing his best to take care of the sole reminder of the woman he loved.

Reiji's only fault is making it far too obvious to Rin that she is his emotional support which is too heavy a burden for a child to bear. This prompts Rin to attempt to be like her mother as she knows her mom and Reiji were each others emotional support. The clincher is the fact that spoiler[ one of Rin's earliest memories is seeing her mom and Reiji having sex right beside her] and it's highly unlikely that this only happened once.

Now I'm not blaming Rin's mom, really no one is to blame(except her shitty dad), and her sexuality is not a result of abuse(though abuse does lead to sexual children irl.) She is a precocious child doing her best to cope with being abandoned by her father and having her mom die as a child. She does this by clinging first to Reiji and then to Aoki. It's just that she was exposed to way more sex than the average child which skews her perception of how men and women function in a relationship.
