I think you may have your dates mixed up as DK64 was released in 1999. You might have been thinking of the first Donkey Kong Country game which came out in 1994.

I was going off the date that was in the article. I should have double checked that, but my point that the event was aimed at AOC's age group still stands.

Oh yeah, I noticed that too and I just forgot to also mention the article at the same exact time as making my initial post on this. I’m sorry if my post gave you the impression of trying to refute your point as I had no intention of doing so and was only trying to note the proper year in which this specific game was released.

Hold on, let me check off "something something political agenda" and "this technically isn't about anime and that's definitely the real reason I don't want to hear about it" on my Internet Backlash Bingo card...

Happened to find the stream right when "AOC" came on, so that was a bit of a surreal experience. Someone posted part of that call-in on Twitter. Still can't quite comprehend how this blew up so quickly; this spontaneous stream from one guy (who wasn't remotely a big name in gaming) and a couple of friends earned about 14% as much as GDQ a couple weeks ago (a well-established bi-yearly event that runs for about a week and has an enormous cast-and-crew team). I guess people should marathon unpopular N64 games more often.

A positive thought for the day: perhaps this will lead to Graham Linehan wallowing in his telling hatred of marginalised people until he becomes as unintelligible as Father Jack.

Man if Graham Linehan was trying to hide his anger, he did a real bad job. Guy tweeted up a storm while people in his replies were getting 3 times as many likes as the post with a Donkey Kong GIF. He also lost a few thousand followers. Guessing he just wasn’t open enough about the transphobia for some people to notice.

No doubt there are comments sections all over the internet that are gonna be filled with the kind of ‘gamers’ who spend more time being bigots on the internet than actually playing games rattling off slurs and being awful, but I haven’t seen this level of widespread positive unity among the gaming community in a long time.

Just a nitpick, DK 64 is far from unpopular as it was one of the best selling games on the system.

DK 64 is one of those games that was critically lambasted at the time (for having an excessive amount of collecting) but still sold like crazy. Yet these days I feel like a lot of people have warmed up to the game again, not just in spite of, but because of the huge number of things to collect. And that made it the perfect choice for this stream, since finishing the game isn't that hard, but getting 100% requires a ton of time and effort.

And he deserves it, after he got Lottery funding withdrawn by going on mumsnet and getting a full on letter writing campaign started.

On this note I researched Linehan and boy, wow, he's like a stereotypical terf to the most extreme. Funny how some of his comments are the same as I've seen coming from right wing 'christians' in the USA… it's like once you go so far it crosses over right to the other side.

(Linehan called me a pedophile once due to me having a twitter userpic of Faris from Steins;Gate and I've hated him since. Still think Father Ted is comedy gold though)

I wondered if this would get reported on ANN. It's still very surreal to me that this blew up as much as it did. I figured it would make several thousand dollars at least, I mean it was gonna be a very long livestream so there would be a lot of time to donate, and it had the benefit of encouraging people to donate both to help out the charity and also to spite Graham Linehan. And never underestimate the power of spite. (For those unfamiliar with what I'm referencing, former comedy writer Graham Linehan organized a campaign that got a 500k grant for Mermaids from the UK's big lottery fund put under review, and this fact served as an inspiration/impetus for hbomber's decision to run the stream)

But I wouldn't have guessed it would reach 6 figures, let alone over $300 k. Or that people like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Chelsea Manning would go on. It's all kinda mind boggling. Other famous people who joined up included John Romero (yes the Doom creator) and Chuck Tingle (yes the famous butt themed kindle erotica author). And quite apart from the "celebrities" that went on, there were a tons of trans people from across the world who got on and spoke about their unique experiences.

It was an amazing and positive experience, something I think a lot of us needed. Because boy was 2019 kind of off to a rough start beforehand.

Yeah the the cynical, self-serving political stunt of...signal boosting a charity fundraiser and then making a short public appearance to directly answer questions about policy relating to the demographics said fundraiser was meant to help.

Like, if we're focused on healthily supporting trans people, isn't having an elected official in a position of legislative power taking the subject seriously a good step in that direction?

I said it gave the impression of a political stunt, not that it was an actual one.

For a politician, especially one under the level of obsessive scrutiny that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is, anything they do could look like a political stunt. Did she help out a charity because she cared, or because it would make her look good and she's already working on reelection and future positions and it would help give her more clout for getting her bills and stuff passed? And what about Harris/hbomber, did he REALLY hold the stream to raise money for charity, or was it a cynical ploy to increase his YouTube subscribers.

Personally, I think they both had good motives. A bit of cynicism is healthy and understandable, but always assuming the very worst about people isn't any more reasonable than always assuming the very best. Given the evidence I've seen so far, though, they seem to genuinely care about people. So I'm going to guess their actions were at least primarily motivated by caring about people.

To add a bit more information, Mermaids is a highly controversial organization in the UK, who have been scrutinized for many years. They've come under fire for some notable homophobic and child abuse cases, which is why Linehan voiced concerns and there's some controversy around the subject.

Graham Linehan believes that supporting trans children is the same as conversion therapy. That's the "homephobia and child abuse" Mermaids has been accused of. Supporting trans kids.

EDIT: Also this is a bit off topic really I guess, Graham wasn't even mentioned specifically in the ANN article, but multiple users mentioned him in this thread so I thought I'd give some context to users who might be wondering, that the stream was partially inspired by a desire to spite him. But I reaaallly don't want this to devolve into an argument about him and I'm sure other users feel similarly.
