The duke finally shows his hand and is putting everything on the line in a bid for the imperial throne. Unlike the more convoluted exposition of previous episodes, this one is quite straightforward in its storytelling. The recently rewarded Duke has been biding his time and used the recent commotion over tampered artificial soldiers to acquire the fairy weapon he needed to better his chances in the upcoming showdown. It seems he wants free "development" (read: exploitation) of fairies to make the world a much bloodier but more technologically advanced place to live in. Arcame is with him on this, since some of the members were survivors of the previous War and don't think much of the new peace.

With the main army lured away to the Hybranz territory, the imperial capital is ripe for a surgical strike. Bevee Liscar is heading the vanguard going for the palace. Either the soldiers shooting at him are cross-eyed and terrified of his reputation, or he's got his fairy doing some kind of bullet-repelling duty before he gets into position. Free delivered last week's letter AND got the added bonus of acquiring the Fairy Weapon he "inherited" from the previous owner, so if the two face off again it should be more of an even match now that both sides are using their previous weapons.

I assume next week's episode is the last one before the upcoming break for the summer months. The action has never disappointed, although the exposition has not been the finest and could be improved. More needs to be done for the relationship between the two leading ladies, since the last few weeks have seen little of Marlya's best friend.

The conclusion to the attempted coup. Plot-wise, nothing much to think about since it's straightforward when Wolfran turns out to be working for Ray Dawn. The apparently loyal duke didn't like Schwarz Diese, so he decided to support his coup attempt with the resources of Arcame and then cut him down when the timing was right. He's got all the cards now that he's personally saved the Emperor from a kidnapping, so if he wants to plot his coup later there'll be no one to stop him.

There's a bit of background information featuring the current imperial Prime Minister, however he's no warrior in the mould of Liscar and Dawn. If he's still loyal, he's going to need better quality troops to command if and when Ray Dawn turns on the empire.

Last episode before the 3 month break, so going all out with the action scenes seems appropriate. Very nice choreography between Free and Liscar, while the Fairy battles aren't half bad themselves. Ray Dawn's Fairy has the interesting ability to turn firearms into rust, so regular soldiers aren't much use against him if he's to be taken down.

I'm hoping to see a conclusion between the Liscar and Dorothea vendetta in the second part, since the warmonger is definitely keen for more punishment. Most of the other hanging plot threads should be resolved then, hopefully the narrative will be tighter now that the first season has spent all that effort doing exposition for the background and past events.

Story continues where #12 left off. New OP and ED, the visuals are great as ever while the accompanying songs are ok but lack impact.

Mostly background exposition, but quite a few important questions are answered here. Humans being what they are, a single event or occurrence can lead to wildly different approaches and conclusions depending on the person affected. Marlya since her birth was trapped by the superstitions of her village, while Veronica despite being the complete opposite chooses not to let the preferential treatment go to her head. Similarly, the Dawn patriarch chose to give up his life in accordance with the village traditions rather than lose more innocent children, his younger son on the other hand made the choice for his fellow villagers to die rather than face a lifetime of servitude under a power-hungry king. I can't say I agree with Ray Dawn's decision, but he made it and has lived with it even after his contributions to the war effort and the rewards he received.

Next episode should return the spotlight to the present. Veronica is still out for revenge, so the Ministry will have to find and stop her. The opposition between Marlya and Veronica remains unresolved, so I'm hoping the animators do a decent job concluding this thread by the end of the adaptation.

You know Ray is not as awful as first thought, in that the village was probably unnecessarily sacrificing innocent children under superstition that it would protect them. Marlya could have been one such child, and spent her childhood being ostracised by the same stupid superstition. Ray kind of loses that a bit in that he decided without exception to slaughter the village, that was not exactly good, and felt like him trying to make sure no one would come for revenge. But it maybe gives some context where you could give a reason why Marlya and Veronica could have different reactions to things, whether Veronica could understand her friend who was marked by everyone else in the village.

Another action set piece. A reminder to viewers watching from part 1 that the opposing pairs of characters are still alive and out to get each other. Ray Dawn is unsurprisingly a target for all kinds of factions who aren't pleased with his latest actions, but this time it's a coincidence that Veronica is also present and going for his head. Since it's the bridge which was bombed, it's clear someone with government connections is involved since the route and timing of the Duke's return could not have been predicted otherwise.

Marlya will probably get away with trying to save her friend, since her colleagues are nice people and more understanding than she thinks. As for Free, he doesn't know what happened to Wolfran's family after the War so will probably need to find out later down the series if he wants to understand his enemy. The new character introduced is a descendant of one of the Tome writers, but his role in this series is not clearly defined. At the very least, if he's working with Wolfran he's anti-government but his interests are aligned with Ray Dawn and Wolfran for the time being.

Pacing has slowed down. After the adventures from the last few weeks it's stocktaking time. The hunt is now on for the remaining Arcame members who weren't directly involved in the coup d'etat. Unfortunately for Dorothea, they remain one step behind their opposition as important figureheads have either betrayed Arcame and escaped or are silenced to prevent unnecessary confessions.

It's only at the very end that things get interesting. The double-agent Axel never struck me as anything more than a petty criminal playing both sides for his personal benefit, but to think he was actually responsible for the assassination AND has a hitherto undisclosed link with Bevee Liscar (the one with the Fairy Weapon who spearheaded the coup d'etat). To top it off he knew he was risking it all by reporting Rahn's location to Dorothea yet did so knowing he would be arrested. Not sure what game he's playing, but it's got to be more than just personal benefit if the stakes are so high.

Next episode trailer indicates something big is going down, so hopefully more action to see.

So that's what Albastora meant when he said he still had options. Spilling the beans on everything he and his clan know about the underground Gui Carlin organization isn't a bad plan under the circumstances; he gets protection from the Eye who really wants him dead and Dorothea has a golden opportunity to root out the organization which has been a thorn in their side for ages. Yet I suspect he doesn't have a complete picture of Gui Carlin; the Black Tome the Minister was reading is either Black Four or Black Nine. If it's the latter, then the Minister himself is one of the Top Four in Gui Carlin and he's still hiding under everyone's noses as the most important and dangerous person of all.

Looks like next week is where Eajey and Free get a rematch. If the latter has his own Fairy Weapon the contest is more even, but something has to be done about the former's special ability when his Fairy is active. It's not possible to hit someone who reads your every move a millisecond after it's been telegraphed.

Albastora kept his word. Thanks to his information, Dorothea finally track down and finish off the last of the gangster organization Free and Marlya were part of at the start of the series. I don't know if the blueprints were supplied by him, but the insertion team made good use of it. Unfortunately for Dorothea, Wolfran Row and Veronica had the exact same idea and took full advantage of the attack to get what they wanted.

The strange religious ceremony last week and at the start of this arc appears to worship some kind of progenitor Fairy. If this is the same Bear Fairy that had to be appeased via human sacrifice in Marlya's village several decades ago, then how it was chained there and the consequences of releasing it from its imprisonment might be themes explored later in the series.

This week's opponent found a way to implant the same Fairy into 54 different humans, a hybrid of the mass-produced Fairy Drones and the unique soldiers used during the Unification War. Too bad for them the Fairy they chose relied exclusively on numbers, one to one it didn't have the combat ability to beat actual soldiers in pitched battle.

Next week's episode has another theme to explore: how is it possible to "recycle" Fairies from dead Soldiers?

This is one of those episodes where a series distinctly shifts from "story arc of the week" to "end-game for the main story". The result of that duel was a surprising one, but it is useful for leading viewers into a concept which has never been properly explained and which turns out to be crucial to the main plot.

I'm really not surprised the Minister was hiding something, it was hinted at over the previous weeks and this week simply blew it out into the open. That odd religion he's a follower of together with the rest of his department makes sense now, but Wolfran Row seems to be less a believer of the flock and more of an opportunist who will use the Minister for however long it takes to achieve his own goals.

Another cliffhanger end to the week, but next week's trailer indicates the opposition as always remains one step ahead of the protagonists in the information war.

Another episode to close the circle on some aspects of the show touched upon briefly in previous weeks. In particular the vignette featuring Olek and Marlya's father at the start of the airing makes more sense after Olek spilled the beans on what the big bear really is. It's surprising it isn't divine, but for anyone who wants to remake the world from scratch after setting fire to it, there's no better apocalyptic weapon than a berserk Fairy which obeys one group's orders alone.

The battle between the mercenary with the recycled Fairy and Marlya makes sense now. He's literally there just to spill the beans on what Marlya really is before dying from assisted suicide. No idea how Wolfran found the pair of them so quickly, but if he doesn't the story can't really reach its conclusion if they dawdle trying to capture their key ingredient.

Veronica hasn't shown up for a while, so will she turn up to save her best friend once more? Or has she been caught by the Eins cult and is also awaiting a fairly awful fate unless there's a rescue in the pipeline?

The irony that apparently Veronica probably would be dead now from being sacrificed if the village had not been exterminated.

Earlier in this series, Wolfran Row could have easily abducted or killed Marlya without too much difficulty. Not now though, she has enough combat experience to hold out if there's help at hand nearby. Without the element of surprise, even Wolfran won't risk fighting Free and Marlya at the same time.

The Director is right to suspect Ray Dawn, his talk with Marlya confirms he and Veronica have the same talent Marlya has, but the conclusions each person has drawn are radically different from each other. For now, he's working towards stopping the order, but what happens if they all survive and he remains as Prime Minister?

The Colonel is back for another assault, but Free has his Fairy Weapon this time round and won't be such a pushover. Veronica will probably use the opportunity to attempt the assassination with her newly acquired Fairy Weapon, but it's more likely she'll be caught by the Order and used for their ritual. Not much time before the series is at an end, but the pacing is coming on nicely for the conclusion.

Ray Dawn got his wish. The desire to settle things quickly got the response he wanted, however the Order has far too many resources at its disposal and eventually achieves its aim of obtaining one of the organs it requires. Most of the main combatants are busy with each other, so it's down to Marlya and Veronica to head to the hideout to try and stop the monster bear.

Two episodes to go, so next week will probably resolve two duels with the last episode giving an aftermath or a solution to the Bear problem. Marlya will use the trick she learned a few weeks ago against the Bear, but someone needs to keep it occupied so that she can get the job done. For that to happen, it's most likely she needs the rest of her surviving team members to meet up with her to increase the chances of success.

I'm looking forward to seeing the process, if not the outcome.

It shows how skilled the Director is when she's only needed to use her Fairy in response to the opponent deploying his. She usually relies on her own skill rather than her Fairy's for combat, something she showed earlier in the first half of the adaptation. Despite the risk, staking it all on attacking before a potentially fatal blow paid off but at a potentially heavy cost. She might bleed to death from it all, she's also just as likely to stay alive to the bitter end.

Free's decision to keep his nemesis alive might be a fortuitous one in the end. He's never beaten Wolfran in battle before, beating him and leaving him to stew turned out well since Wolfran's help will be needed to finish off the final remaining plot member with the capacity to make a mess of everything regardless of what happens to the Beast. It does mean Free won't see Marlya and Vernonica do the Beast itself.

As for the Divine Beast, it makes sense why everything it attacks turns to dust. The desert realm where it was last found was the result of the previous civilisation failing to stop its rampage, so Marlya needs to redo the trick she learned a few weeks back or the whole city and empire are going to see the same fate. Just the one episode, so there should be enough time to finish off the final duel and the Beast in the allotted airtime.
