Thinking more on the mechanics of a Battle Royale. Fate/Extella's stages lend itself to this in some regards.
In case if people don't know, Fate/Extella is a Musou/Dynasty Warriors style game. But instead of the stages being one huge map, it is actually broken up into a number of smaller sectors that are connected together via portal-like systems. So imagine in something like Fortnite, there are no fields to traverse and all that. Just enter a portal to go from Tilted Towers to Snobby Shores to Frosted Flights. From a strategy standpoint, this may give the escaping player who might be under fire or being chased a very brief downtime to either heal up or get into a position to counter whoever is chasing them. Or maybe in a team, setup an ambush on the other side. For the "shrinking map" aspect, I was thinking the sectors would one by one disappear/collapse/gets blown up, with whoever didn't escape said sector in time would immediately get eliminated. No poison gas storm and whatnot, just a warning saying the sector will disappear. I just think this can be an interesting change from the usual method in this aspect. I guess thinking about it, Fate can work as a Battle Royale with Extella's framework, maybe as one of the rarer "non-shooter" variants (The only other example I can think of is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Last Survivor). The only aspect I haven't thought about is how to drop onto the map. Maybe just select a spot and be done with it. As a shooter, there may be an issue with camping near the portals (Maybe have a brief invincibility period? Flash of light to obscure who is coming out of the portal?). |
