This has been a long time coming. I can't wait to see whom they get to play Enishi and what he looks like. Kenshin looks really cool in the preview picture, with that long hair and the vertical scar.

Will all the other cast be returning as well? I know they'll need a new Yahiko, but I hope all the others return. It feels like a family reunion.

As for the Watsuki scandal, who the hell cares? It's all about the fans getting what the fans want in the end. We've been denied a Jinchuu adaptation for too long and nothing should stop this.

With all this talk about "ethics", I wonder how many of you have actually stopped buying products from companies who take part in unethical practices (terrible work environments, large producer of pollution, child labour, animal cruelty, etc.). Probably very few of you, if any.

Here here.

Not much of a surprise though. Viz still censors Dragon Ball manga to this day out of 'ethics'. They purposely refuse to publish uncensored releases of many of their manga. They've always rode on the horse of deciding what people should and should not see.

The nice thing is with the advent of the internet companies can't really moral police it's consumers anymore.

The funny thing is Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune will forever be known as cousins in America because of ethics. Censoring work for 'ethics' goes both ways. Any work aimed at kids that removes LGBT stuff in the localization process is all because 'that's inappropriate to show to kids'. Boom. Ethics.

Maybe people should be careful when they advocate for companies to police the moral and ethical concerns of its consumers.

Imagine if everything related to Toriko's author got this

The main difference with Shimabukuro is that he still got "punished" in some way for his actions. Sure, his jail time got dropped, but Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro was still effectively made a bit of a non-person in the manga world following what he did. His manga Seikimatsu Leader-den Takeshi, which was a hit title, got cancelled, and until he debuted Toriko about 6 years later the only manga he was allowed to get published was a short series (only 3 volumes) plus a single volume worth to give Takeshi some sort of finale, all for Super Jump (i.e. for adults, not kids), . In fact, word is that Eiichiro Oda had to speak up for Shimabukuro to even be given another chance at Shonen Jump, and I'd imagine that Shueisha kept an eye on him for a while after debuting Toriko. After all that, and considering that we never heard of any new incidents involving him, I'd like to believe that Shimabukuro has become a better person in the years since, and has made an effort to try to redeem himself.

Compare that to Watsuki, who only suffered a two-month suspension for his manga, a ~$2,000 fine, & was even apologized to by Shueisha for all of this. While I fully understand why these movies are getting made, and I have no problem with people getting excited for them, I do think there is enough difference between what happened with Shimabukuro & what happened with Watsuki that they can be treated differently.

The live-action Kenshin movies are probably some of the best live-action anime adaptions I've seen. They're definitely the best if we're not including the number of shoujo and josei live-action adaptions, since drama and romance stories are usually much easier to translate into live-action.

I'm glad they're making more and even look to be adapting material past the anime cut off point. Totally looking forward to them. Viz has said their piece, but I wonder if Funimation will license these like the others. I've heard Funimation can be just as bad as Viz when it comes to pushing political agendas. But if not, I'm sure they'll be fansubbed once the Japanese BD drops.

I mean, is it such a bad thing if Viz is tacitly allowing scanlations? To me it seems like a win-win; fans get to read the new material and without paying a cent to someone who's proved he can't be depended on to use that money ethically.

Anyways, I like the movies, but I'll definitely be looking for second-hand options.

So long as they don't complain when people read scanlations of the other series they have licensed. That would be hypocritical of them to try to say it's okay for one series but not another. The can of worms you open up when you decide to go down that route: you're actively driving people to scanlation sites which have hundreds of titles on them. It might be even worse since other companies series are on those sites, so it's not just Viz hurting themselves. We've seen companies do this scorched earth tactic before. We've seen companies flat out say "If you are ___, or support ____ we don't want your money. Don't buy our stuff and go somewhere else". But actively encouraging scanlation sites isn't just hurting their own business in that regard, but the American manga industry as a whole.

But as far as I know, Viz hasn't actually said anything like that. They just quietly pulled the series from their site and haven't addressed it at all. Perhaps someone should ask them for an official statement on why they won't translate it when Japan chooses to publish it.

This just makes it sound like you're using Watsuki as an excuse for why you should be able to watch the movies for free/illegally.

Watsuki is one man. There are tons of other people on the production of the films who deserve to be paid for their work.

Exactly Watsuki got what was basically a slap on the wrist and now he can profit again. The money I used to buy his products in the past was used for him to buy child porn. For all I know the money he earns on this will be used for the same thing.

Yeah he got caught once maybe he will be careful to not get caught again. And it’s not like he paid for his crime at all so why should I trust he wouldn’t do what he did again?

And no I won’t be watching the movies illegally either.

No one cares, your few extra Yen really won't do much.

Your money didn't help him buy anything, he had the magazines from when they were still legal to own in Japan.

Exactly people are just looking for excuses to stream illegally. The amount Watsuki is going to make is minuscule, when you take into account everyone involved in the production of the film. Even after they get paid, there's no guarantee it's going to go to Watsuki, it might go to his wife who is the co-author.

Obviously it's wrong, what you said, is just an excuse to find illegal means to read it. Watsuki isn't the only one getting paid, there is his wife and the editor. By you illegally reading the manga the editor is losing money, wages in Japan are already bad as they are.

Whoops, I shop at Walmart. I guess I'm obligated to buy manga from a pedophile now. Ya nailed me.

Look, I don't see anyone in this thread criticizing people for still buying Kenshin. What I see in this thread is people acting indignant that some don't want to buy Kenshin. If it doesn't bother you, great. But don't act like it's an unreasonable position when people are disgusted and done with Watsuki.

Oh, so you mean he did literally get punished for it. You just don't like the punishment. I don't feel it was appropriate for what he was charged with either, but their culture, their laws. I also feel that people who serve out their legal punishment should be allowed a chance to earn a living, and punishing them until the day they die sounds like cruel and unusual punishment. We actually have a pretty serious problem in the US where many people with non-violent criminal records (including things like possession of just a little bit too much marijuana) can't get jobs after serving their time thus are effectively punished far past the ends of their sentence. So yeah, in the end, if Japan considers the punishment for his crime paid out, I am just going to move on.

This is clearly what people don't get about this: people are not happy at this movie being made because it will in some way enrich Watsuki, either through residuals due to rights or through promotion of his name. No matter what, he is making some kind of profit off it. That cannot stand.

It has to do with Laws not culture. Do not equate the two.

No it's more so both. Child pornography was legal in Japan for a substantially long period of time, this is probably why the punishment of owning such materials is not that extreme.
