Sailor Moon's power elements come from the names of the planets in Japanese. They have the kanji for fire, water, wood, etc. Same as the characters' family names. Is there a specific comment from the writer that makes you think it's from Western astrology?

Mildly surprised Gundam Wing doesn't get a mention; the organisation OZ's name is an acronym for Order of the Zodiac, and all of their mass produced mobile suits are named for star signs.
