By this point, the term for the monster had been lent to raincoats, so Kappaya was a raincoat and umbrella salesman.
A minor correction: the word kappa in the sense of "raincoat" is derived from the Portuguese capa ("cloak") and its resemblance to the name of the youkai is coincidental.

Anyway, a very informative article. Unfortunately I haven't quite managed to catch up on Ikuhara's œuvre prior to the premiere of this show (still have several episodes of Utena left), but I'm really looking forward to the experience.

I haven't watched the PVs but I did watch the first episode last night - are we sure that's an otter, and not some other weasel-family animal? The first thing I thought it looked like was a mongoose and that the circle might represent an egg.

Otters, or kawauso, are associated with Kappas in Japanese folklore so it's almost certainly an otter. They're associated with things like shapeshifting, luring and tricking humans, killing them, and other tales So chances are they'll be the villain.

I think it's likely that the egg shape is the shirikodama. Also, if you look closely in the first episode, the police station has "Kawauso Koban" written above it which is "Otter Police Box."

Good eye for detail, thanks.

BTW the actual koban is the Kikuyabashi kōban, 菊屋橋交番. The officer I have seen there on trips to Tokyo does not look like a bishōnen. In fact he looks pretty ferocious.

If you plan to visit Tokyo I highly recommend basing yourself in Asakusa. The neighborhood has several major subway lines. It is a short walk to Ueno station and park. And one of the lines, the Ginza Line, hits most of the major spots an anime fan is likely to have interest in such as Akihabara, Nihonbashi, all the way to Shibuya.
