The Banner set is supposed have the OVA, which would make for its first legal Western release. I might buy the set for that alone, since the fansub I've long had for it has awful video quality. I'd expect it to be subbed-only, though.

It does. Banner of the Stars III is in the new release set. I bought it specifically for that reason.

If you have the old Bandai DVD's keep them because these FUNimation DVDs are actually lower quality. FUNi's video is a little more cropped, blurry & with other small artifacts. Its not a massive difference but if you're someone who really wants the best video quality seek out the old Bandai release. Its cheaper too.
Seriously how can a modern release look worse than a release from over 15 years ago? FUNimation Rolling Eyes
Well that's very disappointing. Also I'm wondering, did FUNimation fix Bandai's translation errors that plagued the series back in the day, or did they re-use the same translation Bandai made?

Just a few things-the dub isn't as bad as a lot say, while it's far from the best it's also far from the worst I've ever heard. C/BOTS is NOT a space opera, having mentioned earlier that I know science fiction I'd give the show 8.5 out of 10. You want a really good example of sci fi? Go read "Childhood's End" by the late A.C. Clarke. Banner/Crest Of The Stars is one of the best examples of sci fi in anime today-period.

I only checked random lines and they were exactly the same translation as Bandai's but I didn't check them all so maybe there's adjustments that I didn't see. I wouldn't count on it however, there wasn't a lot of effort into this release it seems.

"What was that show again"?
Betterman, Brain Powered, Z-Mind

Betterman was on G4 Tech TV's anime block during the early 00s, so presumably at least a few people will remember it fondly as one of their earliest experiences with anime? I guess they can market it as a spinoff of King of Braves GaoGaiGar, assuming they ever release that show.

As for Brain Powerd, I can see it doing much better this time around if they really push the "MUSIC BY THE COMPOSER OF COWBOY BEBOP'S SOUNDTRACK! WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY THE CREATOR OF GUNDAM! MECHA DESIGNS BY THE BLOKE WHO DRAWS THE FIVE STAR STORIES!" angle. Or, they could really lean in on the fact that it is almost indescribably weird.

(I'm probably incredibly biased when it comes to that show, though, considering I recently went out of my way to track down every officially-licensed super-deformed Brain Powerd figurine.)

Now, Z-Mind... I refuse to believe that license acquisition wasn't part of some "if you want to license ____, you have to take these shows, too" deal. That US release was Neo Ranga-level obscure.

Crest of the Star and Banner of the Stars suffers from a system they used a lot back in the day call Word-fit. It basically elongates or shortens recorded audio to fit the mouth flaps. The result is a performance that sounds unnatural.

Did this apply just to the dub? The Japanese version seems pretty naturally paced.

^It's for the English dub, Ocean had used the WordFit program in the 90s & early 2000s which led to mixed results and while I can't speak for Crest/Banner, I know they did the same with Blue Water dubs as well since Angel Links had it listed in Bandai's English credits for the show with an editor also credited for that one.

Maybe I'm reading too much into the licensing date, but it seems to me that since Funimation has had the license for ~5 years that for whatever reason(s?) this series has never been a high priority for them.

I think Sunrise is more to blame actually. A lot of their anime were licensed at that time and many we still haven't got any news on. FUNimation has been releasing more of those Sunrise shows than Sentai, look at all these shows. I believe only Big O has been released. The fact both these companies are having a hard time releasing these makes me believe its something up with Sunrise.

This I did not know. So Funi's Banner of the Stars release is now on my radar. They will add to my Bandai DVDs.

This thread gave me the itch to go back and rewatch Crest of the Stars.

Me, too. I was surprised to re-discover how much time they spend on the ground in a show about interstellar conflict. I thought Lafiel was cute in her flowered dress and hat.
