So far the adaptation has been spot on and ep 4 will top it all off. They adapted the Soma Familia sub plot right so Im hoping they do the same for the actual War Game

Fully agreed. While I would have liked to see a little more emphasis on the impact of Soma's wine (so that it reinforced better why spoiler[Lili not being overwhelmed by it was such a heroic stance]), I found how they handled it to be reasonable within the time constraints. This was a very well-balanced effort given the material that they had to cover.

If I remember correctly, Ryo is a badass so having her as the extra outside help is pretty cool. I feel like Mikoto hasn't been with Bell's gang for that long so she quitting her familia to join Hestia's feels like a slightly underdeveloped plot thread. I just never got the idea that Mikoto was that close with Bell's gang.

That part is just a tease for what's really going on. Presumably her situation will be explained in more detail next episode, so I recommend withholding judgment until then.

Also, I think you're underestimating the extent of the guilt that Mikoto feels over the Pass Parade incident. She is easily the setting's closest equivalent to a true samurai (her foolishness in the OVA episode notwithstanding) and so is the most honor-driven character introduced to date. Since the rescue party merely wound up escorting Hestia to Bell and didn't actually save his party, her still feeling she deeply owes Bell over that isn't at all unreasonable and this would be the ultimately honorable way to make recompense.

As for Ryu, yep, she's a Level 4. That's significant because of an explanation in the novel which gets skipped over in the adaptation: individuals higher than Level 2 outside of Orario are actually very rare. Hence Ryu, who is blacklisted by the Guild and thus not technically one of Orario's adventurers, is a legitimate ringer.

The show has gotten across that Mikoto feels indebted to Bell, but not to the extent you're claiming, in my opinion at least. She being honourable is plain as day, but mostly because she fits into that typical archetype, not because the show has gotten out of its way to develop her as an extremely honourable true samurai girl who feels deeply indebted to Bell. What I'm saying is, her actions don't completely come out of left field but the show hasn't given me the idea that Mikoto feels so deeply indebted to Bell that she would go as far as to leave her familia to help him.

I'll agree with this take. I'm fresh off my first watch of the entire series, and when this happened I was surprised. It wasn't "this takes me completely out of the story" surprised, but it was "I guess I'll accept this and move on because that's how these kind of characters act in anime" kind of surprised.

Maybe she gets more development later, that would be fine. I just didn't know enough about her for this to seem like a natural development.

As much as I've come to appreciate other characters through the mobile game, Lili has always been my #1 (I have every one of her units in the game). Glad she finally officially joined the familia, but I guess she has no reason to wear her animal ears anymore Sad

But man, seeing Tiona and Bell together on screen takes on a whole new meaning after finishing the 2nd anniversary event.

Agreed! Frankly, I think the whole Argonaut storyline may be the best mobile/computer game storyline I've ever encountered. (Please note I am not not classifying VNs as games for this purpose.) I would dearly love to see it get animated as a movie or spin-off series at some point.

Again, this should make more sense next episode when you find out what's really going on with that.

she's doing it as a way to repay them for almost getting them killed back in season 1. Remember that while that may have been 4 years ago for us it was only a few days or weeks ago for them

Personally I still think Grand Day was better. spoiler[Dat Bell and Lefiya scene...]

What I weirdly really liked about this episode was when Zanis came to kinda rub Lili's situation in her face right before the attack. The voice acting and Lili's expression just got across Lili's disgust for Zanis so well, like she wasn't hiding how much she hates Zanis at all and even got into Zanis' head for a while. Somehow I just really liked that small defiance from her. She's always been the best girl though.

I expected the Soma stuff to have more emotional impact in the adaptation, but it all felt like it went by a little too fast. The significance of the wine wasn't told all that well, so Lili being able to overcome it - and her abusive family, and her inferiority complex - wasn't as strong a moment. It was still good, sure, but not as good as I'd hoped. But well, such is the case with adaptations.

Oh, I'll give you that it was an awesome scene, and Grand Day had a good storyline overall, but I felt that the outside-of-fights dramatics in Argonaut were stronger. I also really liked both the somewhat different angle that Argonaut took on being the hero and the poignant epilogue on that one.

Damn, we should have a dedicated thread for discussing that game.

Good episode this week, but it definitely felt rushed near the end. It's understandable in adaptations that things may get cut for time, but it was unfortunately noticeable this week.

Agree on both points as well & I'd love to get an animated version of that storyline too!

Good call on the pacing btw Key, looks like your 4 episode count was right on the money.

As I've been reading more and more LNs before they get animated, I have been noticing that break points for anime episodes are very predictable once you get a sense for how the production staff is pacing the adaptation; for instance, after the first 3-4 episodes I could estimate with high accuracy where all of the episode breaks would be in SAO Alicization, too.

Rather doubt it, given the enthusiasm level that the gods in general seem to have for any kind of entertainment. They've been shown before to not care if someone else is getting troubled by it. (Remember Hestia's "date" with Bell in the first season?)
