So... if not incestuous, then what word would you use to describe, um, the previous sentence? Because it sounds like this show is using all the standard anime-rom-com cliches ("guy accidentally sees girl naked, awkward panic ensues" is another staple) between a dude and his mom.

The fact that the review specifically warns everyone not to watch this with their actual mothers kinda says it all, really. Not trying to shame anyone for liking it, but we have to at least admit to ourselves that it's My L33t Gamer Mom Can't Be This Hot.

And I'm not going to believe the direction of any of this, even if said directly by the creators, until the last page of the last volume. I've got eyes, I can see Masato try to save Mamako by grabbing her right boob with one hand while Wise grabs the other.

That was comedic fanservice and I have seen similar scenes thousands of times in ecchi shows. The average ecchi fan watching that scene will laugh when he sees Masato and Wise try to help the falling Mamako and mess up. There is no need to look for a message when it is merely comedic fanservice which to a lesser degree was occasionally seen in Slayers.

I think the author has no plans for incest and he simply wanted to make a comedy fanservice light novel series. The author puts Mamako on the front cover of every light novel and they just announced a Mamako anime figure.

Just to give my two cents but I would call that scene awkward comedy fanservice. I can understand why some people are going to to find it too strange but it was very much a comedy scene in the light novel. Also in the light novels spoiler[Masato was trying to find a girlfriend in the first light novel and he fell in love with a priestess in the second light novel.]

@Chrono1000 By the way, yes. I have noticed for a long time that people take an ecchi comedy too seriously.

this does not go the incest route do not worry, we have confirmation on that all ready.
Personally I really dislike the kid in episode 1 but that has more to do with me I am pretty sure. I am curious to see more of this show.

never say never! and if they do go that route, i hope they use examples from koi kaze or angel sanctuary and not pull an oreimo!

[quoteI did not, however, expect for Masato to be falling into his mommy's mammaries quite so soon, nor was I prepared for lines of dialogue like “Mommy's wearing a thong today!” That said, I highly doubt the story will go anywhere incestuous. And if I'm wrong, well, people can dunk on me for this quote later. [/quote]

dont be surprised if it does happen later on in future novels. i for one have ZERO issue if it does happen but i got doubts it will since as well all know, MILF/son romances ONLY happens in ero visual novels (sexual pursuit) and some ero comiket doujins!

and ever since oreimo's ending, LN authors have been running scared of even touching the genre and sticking to non blood related series like eromanga sensei and others restort to romances involving cousins! (SAO fairy dance arc & tokyo ravens)

depending on how this series turns out will either grow the family romance genre OR permanently kill it forever!

I kind of loved the premise when I first heard it - the overpowered mom stepping on her son's ego by being better at the game than him, and being a little clueless about how that affects their relationship, but I really really hate that they made her so vapid. There are the occasional allusions to the idea that she's played games before, which is perfect, but it would be so much more watchable if she were deliberately playing the game well instead of accidentally doing so. I wanted to like it but I'm not sure if I can.

This, this, a thousand times this.

I am very disappointed with this show, but I will freely admit that I had unrealistic expectations for it. As a parent and a gamer, I thought maybe we were in for something where cocky teenage gamer-boy finds out the hard way that not only was his mother punking n00bs before he was born, but that she was damned good at it, too.

This year is EverQuest's 20th anniversary, so there's no reason to think that the mother of a teenage son couldn't have been playing an MMO like that when it was new (and HARD). She could easily have been running Vox or Nagafen raids before she got married, much less pregnant, and then hung up her rubicite armor once she had a child to raise.

Instead, so far she's coming across as a complete ditz who is only this powerful by accident (or, more accurately, by the design of the game).

So I can't really call it a bad show because it wasn't the show I wanted it to be, but speaking as an old fart MMO player, I'm definitely disappointed when I think of what could have been.

On the other hand, I am more than willing to call it a bad show for the the "slime-wrestling your naked mother while the BUY OUR BLU RAYS beams of light shine everywhere" scene. Yeah, no. Gonna have to give it a hard pass if this is what we're in for.

I can already see where they're going to go with Wise and her mom, but if it were up to me I'd never force her to reconcile with that woman. There has clearly never been any love there, ever. Just let her be adopted by Mamako.

Overall, the show is about what I expected it to be. Mom jokes, milf service, average-at-best story writing that doesn't take itself very seriously.

Me too bruddah...But "they" said this show was going to be milf/incent porn and seems "they" were right... Confused Have to hand it to the reviewer, the thumbnail image for this week's Ep captures everything perfectly

Well, yes, that's what it sounds like. The thing is... there appears to be a common misconception that, if something is meant to be funny, anything about it that might "normally" be considered inappropriate is now 100% harmless and no one should bother complaining about it. This doesn't really add up, because comedy comes more from exaggeration than fabrication; people often use it deliberately to express weird stuff they can't talk about seriously.

That doesn't mean everyone watching this show is literally Oedipus, but the author could have chosen to put any jokes imaginable into it, and the fact that he kept going back to "awkward fanservice comedy involving a teen and his mom" can't just be brushed off as completely meaningless. Most little-sister-service anime are "comedies," too, because that layer of plausible deniability makes them more palatable to both publishers and the fans. If it quacks like a duck, it might not be a real duck, but it's at least trying to sound like a duck.

Was EverQuest even released in Japan?

I'm not sure how long it took to get an official Japanese release, but I do remember that two of the biggest raiding guilds on my server during the time of the first and second expansion were Japanese.

There was also the Final Fantasy XI MMO, which was released in Japan 17 years ago. The mother of a teenage son could definitely have been playing PC-based MMOs in her time.

Clearly she's bad news, but by contrasting her with Mamako, an unfortunate implication can be drawn that a mother having any desires of her own—especially sexual desires—makes her unfit to be a parent.

Huh? Is the reviewer implying Mamako has no desires of her own? Because she quite clearly does, but in contrast with Wise’s mother, none of her’s have an overwhelmingly toxic effect on her familial relationships.
If any person totally shirks their responsibilities as a parent and spouse as Wise’s mother has inorder to satisfy what is quite frankly an addiction; then yes, they are very much unfit to be a parent.
Which is why I fully agree about how incredulous it is that the narrative is treating Wise as if she’s in the wrong for wanting absolutely nothing to do with her emotionally abusive mother.
I hope the following episode settles things a little more smartly than “they hugged it out, everything is good now”, which it kinda looks like they’re going for.

I love this show, have not had a nice straight well done one of this genre in a while. ..and they are doing it well and with great art and animation. I look forward very much to the BluRays because we can then see the show the way it is supposed to be seen. I am so tired of the lame censorship suffered by both anime and manga but that is how things are.

I really look forward to the next episode. A success in all ways this show is a fine part of the quarter's offerings.

As for the question of incest, of course it is part of the energy of the show, and well done too. It is not an issue in Japan it is just another genre and part of many many shows, manga and light novels and nothing to be afraid of or worry about. I am hopeful that JC Staff dont hold back on the subject and the fact they took the story on shows I hope they wont. they are doing great so far....and it is NOT something to be labelled any more than the eros seen in many of the scenes should not be seen as just ecchi or fan service..it is part of the story and a good part of it too. The western habit of trying to pull out and separate ecchi from stories and to object to it...is just western, it is not Japanese..and this IS Japanese anime after all. So lets enjoy it. Anime is not a place for serious character development or life lesson learning, or high minded social issue development, tho that is often part of some of the best shows. It is entertainment and fun.

I even ordered one of the commemorative figures of Mamako which I haven't done in ages.

I think the sentiment you are expressing, and that I fully agree with, would be better written "Anime does not always need to be about serious character development or life lesson learning, or high minded social issue development,... It can also be just entertainment and fun".

A similar statement about sexuality and especially incest in anime I would add "the presence of sexual elements does not necessarily imply a general endorsement or commentary relative to social attitudes, acceptance, etc of said elements, they can just be present as part of a setting or characterization". I tend to like to take shows as they are presented and not read all sorts of extra information into them as a pretext to promoting or holding a negative/positive view.

I don't support/promote incest but the mere presence in a story I really don't see as a reason to be offended/disgusted by the show, attempt to engender the same reactions in others by (deliberate) miss-labeling, refuse to watch and/or call for a boycott, etc. I came into Mom with people alleging it was and wasn't XYZ and those elements are there, but as time has gone on it is obvious that the show isn't about those elements or their promotion, they are just present as a plot device.

To that effect, Mai Nakahara delivers an impressive performance as the motor-mouthed Medhimama, which goes a long way toward making her affably annoying instead of downright insufferable

I freaking knew it, the moment she introduced herself I thought "there is no way that is not Akagi's Voice Actress", boy, Mai Nakahara is awesome, looking forward to azur lane next season
