this seems to be a trend for documentaries on Netflix, most of the ones I have watched seem so disoriented and poorly directed, like they are just stitching scenes without any sense of what they want to say as a whole. The only exception I can think of is that one we got about japanese Idols

This sounds horrendous and at best could be a few snippets of interesting interviews. At worst, it runs the risk of misinformation and, as the columnist so aptly put it, "othering" anime and Japan as a whole from the millions who tune in to Netflix. Rolling Eyes

I'm getting less and less inclined to give Netflix a break after stunts like this. Perpetuating untrue and even harmful stereotypical ways of thinking is just unacceptable.

well, could be worse: Dan Kanemitsu was called a pedo apologist AND nazi for liking Strike Witches and Girls und Panzer just because salty fans didn't like his translation choices on Netflix's Evangelion.Youtuber Suede even blocked me when I said he can't label Dan like that just because of his taste in anime...
you know, just like how certain people from a certain place like to put labels on people for liking stuff like Goblin Slayer and Shield Hero...

30 seconds in and I realized its a Netflix advertisement for what they have on hand. I was really hoping for an anime documentary. They are so rare.

For me it looked more like an “ego trip” than a documentary about anime.

Oh my goodness, I know BBC is never known for unbiased reporting but this is still...please tell me this is not real

I can't immediately recall reading an article on anime from a mainstream British media outlet that didn't go down the "these people are perverts" route at least a little bit.

It was from an investigative journalism documentary series, Stacey Dooley Investigates, which was independently produced, but broadcast on a BBC channel. It didn't follow any editorial line, like say it's in house programs such as Panorama. The programme could have easily aired on any other brodcaster, ITV, Channel 4, if they ponyed up the cash to commission it. The distinction is important, if you really want to be critical of its reporting, such as its ludicrous approach to balance.

For all that's said, yes there was a documentary that aired on the BBC which featured an allegedly heavily edited interview with someone involved in Girls und Panzar. I couldn't comment on the content as I've not watched it.

Can't we just somehow get the unedited interviews with the Japanese staff of the Netflix anime dumped in an hour long special or something like that instead? I feel like that would be a lot more interesting than this dumpster fire.

This sounds like something that you'd expect to be produced sometime in 1999, not 2019.

The whole "anime is weird/edgy/interesting" schtick wore off after the turn of the 21st century. It makes no logical sense to continue such a form of creed in this day and age.

Netflix seriously shot themselves in the foot with this move.

Burunova had preconceived notions of what anime was and wanted to find out more about it, but wasn't really asking the right questions and wasn't exploring the answers she was given in much detail. At one point, she says (paraphrasing) that she's had enough and it's time to get to the heart of the matter, but it ends up being a not-so-serious interrogation room interview of Rei Kuroki. It's no wonder she felt like she was running into a wall.

Actually, the BBC is probably the one UK news outlet with a reputation for unbiased reporting. Or at the very least a bias for whoever is currently in government, rather than a fixed party or ideology, but I digress.

She did, in fact she painted the whole genre with a wide brush and claimed all of them should be put in jail and their works banned. She came into the interview with a massively unchecked moralist tone, the whole thing being about arguing that humans are born good and pure and it's pop media and counter culture that corrupts them, while Takeshi Nogami (character designer for GuP) argued that people have kinks and it's better if those people have a safe and harmless outlet for those kinks. Honestly, she strikes me as the kind of person who truly thinks that Shakespeare is all a person of good standing can ever possibly need in terms of fiction.

The part that really got people riled up tough, was when she told Nogami that Japan should just follow what the UK does in terms of media censorship, to which Nogami answered that the UK should instead take hints from Japan, since they have the lower crime rates.

Aside from being a masterclass in what not to do when editing a film, the fluff piece was pretty telling...

Netflix US truly doesn't have a good grasp on the market it's trying to appeal to, nor does it really have a good grasp on the content they wish to curate.

They actually spent money on this, when the cheaper and less embarrassing method would have been to actually spend some time researching why their competitors in this particular market are able to find success. The fact that they still refuse to simulcast airing content "because we find fans prefer our binge watching structure" boggles my mind.
