It would be nice if we got clarification for a 2 million discrepancy between the two sources but I am guessing we never will.

It's not quite that people are making a fuss purely due to the Demon Slayer fanbase but more how close Demon Slayer came to beating One Piece. For the whole time One Piece has been publishing its yearly sales figures have only been beaten 3 times (2001 by Vagabond, 2005 by Nana, 2006 by Death Note). Any time a series comes close it causes fuss especially when the last to get close was back in 2014 with Attack on Titan.

I've seen this mentioned before, but where do those numbers come from?
