Funny how Abigail is featured on ANN’s website at the time of this article.

Expressing "deep concern" and "encouraging" doesn't modify any local laws on the subject.

I highly suspect the reason the council publicizes his opinion was to seek popular support from the masses. Anime is very niche and very prone to misinformation and blank judgments (although I won’t deny that sometimes anime does have some iffy contents), and once general media outlet spread this “concern” wide who knows what kind of reaction it can provoke.

Next year is Olympic year for Japan and very likely Japanese government itself might doing “something” to address this “concern”. I am praying I am wrong in this case

Well, they have a point. You have my sword. And you have my bow. And my axe! UN.
The 2020 Summer Olympics will be an... interesting time when it comes to the weeb scene. Those tourists will have stories to tell and there is going to a (temporary) crackdown on all sorts of stuff before them. Gonna be fun.

Have fun in this hellhole of a discussion in the meantime. The "its all fiction" fractions have already formed up. Good luck with any of that in the real world. Call of Duty MW 2019 is all fiction too. You saw what happened when the game was supposed to launch in Russia. People were capable of seeing nuance in other markers too. The same is happening here. The UN ain´t talking about your Eva DVD collection but no. Nuance = bad. Loli = good. Free peaches forever and there better be no consequence ever either.

I wonder how many of you would do the same if anti-semitic or war propaganda was the topic and not fictitious child pornography. Would you people stand up for Isis leaflets, I wonder...

That's a fantastic strawman. ISIS propaganda explicitly advocates for murdering innocent people. Nothing about loli/shota content advocates harming actual minors.

(Also note that, in the US at least, one is free to make racist or anti-Semitic statements so long as they do not advocate violence. However, one is not at all free from the social consequences of being that kind of massive piece of shit.)

You don't seem to have grasp of what is fiction and what is non-fiction. If you're going to compare those two scenarios then you should have picked a fictional terrorist group. If someone wants to create First Order propaganda from Star Wars I don't personally have any issue with it. It's fictional. Would you be against such fictional propaganda?

Honestly the UN is about a hairs width away from being as relevant as the league of nations was.. (look that up kiddos). I'd rather see the UN issue a proclamation against certain Bad State Actors.. then deal with drawings..

I agree with the feelings of abhorrence towards seeing minors sexualized.. seeing loli or shota is not something I seek out. However these are in fact drawings.. and I have to start asking what the end game is on censoring drawings? No minors were hurt or victimized by these drawings. So what Criminal act has been performed?

If you don't like it don't look at it.. pretty simple.

You mean the guy who made a music video all about jerking off to underage Nickelodeon sitcom girls? Did he really say that? Cause... I doubt it lol.

Either way, UN has tried this before, Japan has always slapped common sense into them and ignored them. The UN is useless.

Can someone explain to me why U.S. ratified the document? I'm guess it's a conservatives fault ( At that time, The Bush administration is a republican.) So much conservative and family "values".

Except they very well could. Asuka and Rei are underage and the fanservice/nudity of them constitutes sexualizing minors. The same can be said for many shows. Dragonball has actually has been pulled from some libraries and public outlets and labelled as "child porn" by them for their reasoning because of Goku and Bulma nudity. People thinking any kind of laws made about that will only effect niche, obscure series are in for a rude awakening.

Or you could just look on Twitter where there's a whole group of people there dedicated to attacking anime for sexualizing minors. From My Hero Academia to Demon Slayer. Those shows are routinely targeted, their mangaka sent death threats and harassed, and anyone who is a fan of said shows are pedophiles in their eyes. Fan artists too. One Japanese artist I followed had to shut down and go private recently due to tons of harassment from English speakers attacking her for her artowork once they found it.

So, yes actually. Your boxset of Eva could very well be considered obscene if these types of people had their way.

Im deeply concerned about China’s human rights violations, but since they’re on the board for the UN’s Council for Human Rights I guess we’ll go after cartoons.

Or maybe we should ask Saudi Arabia about the human rights abuses from their war with Yemen, they’re on the council too...

No? Guess it’s cartoons then.

I was just in Japan recently. A lot of stuff has been toned down than prior - lots of convenience stores have removed displayed pornography and the like although many still have gravure (that's a topic that will be fun to explain to westerners) - but there's still a lot that Japan won't be able to keep from tourists that will go to the very obvious tourist hotspots. Akihabara is probably the most obvious example. It's pretty easy to find a lot of content that falls into what is being discussed here around Akiba even if you're not looking for it as most of the hobby stores in Akiba sell all sorts of products to cater to otaku culture. Liberty 2 is a skip over a stone outside Akiba Station on the JR side and has all kinds of "interesting" doujinshi that they outright label in English as to what it is, and it in no way beats around the bush trying to hide.

Ah the UN, the masters of the following:

-Being completely useless and a money pit.

-Not having scientists take the stage at the climate summit despite being in a time when they are being shafted and suppressed hard by both sides of the spectrum, even the left has science deniers now.

-Ignoring real issues like Saudi Arabia having social policies that aren't even late 19th century compliant and focusing on non-issues (these guidelines being one of these non-real issues)

-Having Saudi Arabia heading the human rights committee, where women's rights are still not even in the mid 19th century much less the 20th or the 21st and it's worse for homosexuals

These guidelines need to be ignored and the UN needs to be defunded and disbanded, the money could be used for a lot of better things like universal healthcare or that money could be used to forgive student loan debt that so many people want.

Before you guys accuse me of being a feminazi, I'm a feminist, yes, but I ask this out of curiosity.

How many of the people here that defend shota and loli are men, and how many of them are women? I think that could say something about the matter.

Let's ask the pervert prince and the American president who brags about molesting teen pageant participants, among the well-heeled friends of the now-deceased billionaire trafficker, what the ethical thing to do about this is.
For someone with the fetish, any depiction of any child, no matter how innocent, is enough to whet the appetite. The innocence may even be additional titillation. No manga or doujinshi created this environment where children can be bought as sex toys if you have enough wealth or can travel to the seediest corners (an expanding region) of the planet. If the UN wants to really do something for these victims, underage or not, it should work with Interpol (right, isn't that Putin's bailiwick now? Oh well.) to staunch the illicit and lucrative trade.

I'm so sick of humanity own-goaling itself.
