Much of the narrative and plenty of metaphors allude to Japanese social/political issues that were prominent in the late 90’s and the start of the 2000’s. If you aren’t familiar with those issues or their history in modern Japan, it might be difficult to fully appreciate, especially the satire. Of all his works, I think it is the least accessible to foreigners. |
